PolyKnight Games is an independent video game studio based in the Dallas, Texas area, known for atmospheric, exploration-driven games that favor discovery, mood, and environmental storytelling over combat and conventional objectives. The studio was formed by a group of University of Texas at Dallas alumni who pooled their experience in software engineering, design, and writing to build a company of their own, setting up their first base of operations in an unused wing of a rehabilitation hospital in Flower Mound, Texas. Its name came about almost by accident: the founders had been weighing a name that reflected their commitment to making 3D games when someone suggested PolyKnight in a group chat, and one co-founder bought the web domain before the rest of the team had even formally agreed. Describing itself as a team of “sometimes like-minded designers,” with most of its “knights” in Dallas and a few working remotely, the studio adopted a simple guiding philosophy of making the games it wants to make, grounded in the belief that games offer creators unique ways to tell stories and craft lasting experiences.
That philosophy shaped the studio’s debut, a serene exploration flying game set in a strange world where physics are turned inside out, in which players glide through inverted, wraparound environments uncovering the remnants of a vanished civilization and encountering colossal ancient beings. Built in the Unity engine and published by Aspyr, the game launched in January 2018 across PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, earning praise for its tranquil atmosphere, evocative art direction, and meditative sense of flight, and becoming a favorite among players seeking relaxing, contemplative experiences. The team has acknowledged that even a project scoped carefully around its small size proved hugely ambitious, and its success gave the studio a firm foundation as an independent developer. Now operating as a compact core team alongside a circle of former collaborators, PolyKnight Games remains an example of a small independent studio carving out a distinctive identity through beauty, curiosity, and calm.
