For Honor drops you onto a battlefield where Knights, Vikings, Samurai, Wu Lin and Outlanders clash in brutal close-quarters combat. Developed by Ubisoft Montreal alongside Ubisoft Québec, Ubisoft Toronto and Blue Byte, it is built around a melee system unlike anything else in the genre, turning every swordfight into a tense contest of timing, nerve and skill.
The Art of Battle: Steel, Timing and Nerve
At the heart of For Honor is the Art of Battle, a three-directional combat system that makes every exchange feel deliberate. Lock onto an opponent and your guard shifts between left, right and top; match the direction of an incoming strike and you block it, read it early enough and you can parry it outright. Light and heavy attacks, guard breaks, feints and dodges layer on top, and every swing draws from a stamina bar that leaves you slow and exposed if you burn through it.
The result is combat that rewards patience over button mashing. Experienced players bait reactions, punish mistakes and mix up their attack angles, and the moment you land your first clean parry into a punishing counter, the depth of the system clicks into place.
Warriors From Every Corner of the Known World
A cataclysm shattered the old world a thousand years ago. From its ashes, the great warrior cultures rose again, each struggling to rebuild and recapture the glory of its ancestors. The game's factions bring very different traditions to the fight:
- Knights
- Armored warriors of Ashfeld who fight with longswords, maces and polearms. They favor solid defense and disciplined technique, with fighting styles ranging from balanced swordsmen to heavily protected defenders who hold the line.
- Vikings
- Raiders from the frozen north who overwhelm opponents with axes, raw strength and relentless aggression. Their heroes are built to wear enemies down, bully them off balance and dominate the space around them.
- Samurai
- Warriors of the Dawn Empire who wield katanas, nodachi and naginatas with lethal precision. They lean on speed, reach and deadly counterattacks, punishing any opponent who commits to an attack carelessly.
- Wu Lin and Outlanders
- The Wu Lin bring the martial traditions of ancient China to the battlefield, while the Outlanders are warriors who stand apart from the great factions, adding unfamiliar weapons and unpredictable fighting styles to the mix.
Fight Your Way
Whether you prefer the chaos of a full-scale battle or the focus of a one-on-one duel, For Honor has a mode to match:
- Dominion (4v4): Two teams fight over capture zones while lines of soldiers clash in the middle of the map. Score enough points and the enemy team starts breaking, unable to respawn until they claw back control, with Feats and Revenge ready to swing a losing fight.
- 2v2 and 1v1: Smaller, more personal fights that strip combat down to skill and teamwork. Duels in particular are For Honor at its purest, with two players, one arena and nowhere to hide from a misread attack.
- Ranked: Once you have the fundamentals down, Ranked modes measure you against players of similar skill and give every win and every loss real weight as you climb.
- Story Campaign: A single-player campaign takes you through the conflict stirred up by Apollyon, a ruthless warlord determined to set the factions against one another, and it can also be played with a friend in online co-op.
Make Your Warrior Your Own
New gear drops as you play, and armor, weapons, colors and materials can all be customized, so the look of your hero grows with every match. Over time, your warrior becomes a statement of how you fight and how far you have come, instantly recognizable to anyone who crosses blades with you.
A Battlefield That Keeps Evolving
Now in its tenth year of content, For Honor is still growing. Ubisoft continues to add new heroes, game mode events and maps through regular updates, so the battlefield you learn today keeps offering fresh challenges and new rivals to study.
If you have ever wanted a fighting game where a sword feels like a sword, For Honor is waiting. Choose your warrior, raise your guard and step onto the battlefield. Your first duel is only the beginning.
