Founded in December 2017 by Michael Worosz and Allen Murray as Take-Two Interactive's third publishing label, Private Division emerged with a revolutionary vision to bridge the gap between big-budget AAA productions and small indie projects by championing what the industry calls "triple-I" games. Recognizing that many experienced developers from studios behind legendary franchises like Assassin's Creed, Halo, Fallout, and Battlefield were seeking creative freedom without the constraints of massive team politics, Worosz pitched an unprecedented publishing model that offered something no other major publisher would: allowing partner studios to retain full ownership of their intellectual property. This developer-friendly approach attracted top-tier talent to create ambitious projects like The Outer Worlds from Obsidian Entertainment, Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey from Panache Digital Games, and the beloved Kerbal Space Program series, establishing Private Division as a "light-touch publisher" that provided funding and support while preserving creative vision. Following Take-Two's strategic shift toward AAA and mobile gaming, the label was sold to investment firm Haveli Investments in November 2024 and subsequently transformed into Fictions in 2025, now operated by former Annapurna Interactive staff who continue the mission of empowering mid-sized studios to create innovative, high-quality gaming experiences that might otherwise struggle to find traditional publishing support.
