This War of Mine

Digital 606

This War of Mine puts you on the wrong side of a war story. You are not clearing rooms or calling in air support, you are a group of ordinary people in the besieged city of Pogoren, boarding up a ruined townhouse and working out how to reach tomorrow on what little is left. 11 bit studios built it from accounts of civilians living through real sieges, and it shows in every decision the game asks of you.

The Day Belongs To The Shelter

Daylight is when the snipers are watching, so nobody leaves. Instead you work the house: raising a workbench, a stove, a rainwater collector and beds, boarding the holes that let the cold in, and rationing what came back the night before. Trade with the neighbours who come knocking, patch up the wounded, and keep an eye on who is sliding into despair.

The Night Belongs To The Ruins

After dark you pick one survivor and send them out. A supermarket, a quiet house, a bombed hospital, a military outpost: each location is its own tense little level, with a backpack that fills far too quickly and other people who may want what you are carrying. Sneak, negotiate, or take it by force, then get home before the light comes back.

Survival Has A Price And Somebody Pays It

Hunger, illness and cold
Every survivor tracks food, health, warmth and rest, and neglecting one of them cascades into the others. A hungry survivor scavenges badly, a wounded one cannot go out at all, and a house without fuel in winter is a slow emergency.
Conscience as a resource
Your people carry what you make them do. Robbing the defenceless, refusing a neighbour in need or losing someone from the group pushes them toward depression, and a broken survivor stops helping long before they stop breathing.
No good answers
There is no morality meter and no reward for playing nicely. There is only the group in front of you, the supplies you did or did not bring back, and the version of yourself you are willing to live with when the ceasefire finally comes.

Different Every Time You Start

The survivors you begin with, the shelter you occupy and the locations on your map are shuffled with each new game, so the pressures are never in the same order twice. This War of Mine: Final Cut gathers the years of free updates into the base game: remastered versions of the classic locations, an extra scenario, a brand-new character, and new quests and events drawn from the Stories chapters.

Charcoal, Rain And Silence

The whole city is drawn in smudged charcoal and washed-out grey, a cross-section of gutted rooms lit by a single lamp, and the soundtrack mostly stays out of the way so the rain and the distant shelling can do the work. It is a beautiful game about an ugly thing, and its restraint is exactly why it lands.

Board up the windows, take stock of what you have, and decide who you are going to be when the food runs out. Pick up This War of Mine and see how long your shelter holds.

This War of Mine does not pull any punches in it's gritty and stark depiction of war and will move you in a way that few games can.
