Resident Evil 6

Digital 1,502

Resident Evil 6 takes one outbreak and tells it four times over. The C-virus surfaces in North America, tears through the war-torn Eastern European state of Edonia and reaches the Chinese city of Lanshiang, and each stage of that collapse belongs to a different pair of agents. Leon S. Kennedy, Chris Redfield, Jake Muller and Ada Wong are working the same catastrophe from four angles, and the game is built so their paths keep crossing.

Four campaigns, one outbreak

Leon S. Kennedy and Helena Harper
The thread closest to classic Resident Evil, and the one that opens with the outbreak reaching American soil. Tight interiors, limited light and slow-building dread carry most of it, with the zombies coming in numbers rather than one at a time.
Chris Redfield and Piers Nivans
The military campaign, fought as BSAA operators against the J’avo in Edonia and later in Lanshiang. This is the loudest of the four threads, built around squad firefights, heavier weapons and enemies that keep mutating as you shoot them.
Jake Muller and Sherry Birkin
The chase. Jake carries something the people behind the C-virus want, so the pair spend their campaign being pursued by the Ustanak, an enemy that keeps coming back long after you think it has been dealt with.
Ada Wong
A solo campaign that runs alongside the other three and answers what they leave open. It leans on infiltration and information rather than firepower, and it reads very differently once you have finished the other three threads.

Crossover and co-op

Every campaign except Ada’s supports two-player co-op, on one screen or online, so you and a partner take one pair of agents through a full story. The Crossover mechanic is what makes the structure more than four separate games: at the points where two narratives meet, up to four players can fight the same encounter together, and some stages swap the usual partnerships so you are covering someone else’s back for a while.

What the C-virus makes

The C-virus does not produce one enemy type. Zombies are the familiar face of it, but the J’avo change shape as they take damage, Chrysalids hatch into something worse, and later encounters mix all of it together. Learning which threat in a room needs to die first is most of the difficulty.

Controls that keep you moving

  • The redesigned control scheme lets you shoot while moving, slide, roll in any direction and take cover, which changes how a crowd of zombies is handled compared to the earlier games in the series.
  • Melee is a real option rather than a last resort. Counters and finishers matter when ammunition runs low, and they keep close-quarters fights readable instead of hopeless.
  • The Character Skill system spends skill points on faster reloads, improved firepower or a larger health bar, so two players can build the same agent to suit very different habits.

Beyond the campaigns

Agent Hunt turns the game around and lets you join another player’s session as a zombie, a J’avo or another C-virus mutation, hunting the human characters instead of playing one. The Mercenaries returns for timed score attack runs, The Mercenaries No Mercy packs in twice as many enemies, and seven additional stages that were sold as DLC elsewhere are included here, unlocked through achievements. Free Left 4 Dead 2 crossover content adds its survivors and Infected to No Mercy.

Start with whichever agent you like, bring someone along for the ride, and see how much of the outbreak you can piece together before the other three campaigns fill in the rest.
