Guilty Gear: Strive

Digital 1,490

Guilty Gear -Strive- is the latest chapter in Arc System Works' long-running fighting series, and the entry that finally lets newcomers in without asking veterans to give anything up. Series creator Daisuke Ishiwatari rebuilt the fundamentals around attacks you can actually read, then made the stages themselves part of the fight.

The Conclusion to a Story Twenty Years in the Making

Sol Badguy and his rival Ky Kiske head into the final confrontation with That Man, the figure responsible for the destruction visited on the world and its inhabitants. A starting roster of fifteen fighters carries a plot two decades in the building to its conclusion, and each of them has their own stake in how it ends.

Simple to Start, Deep to Master

Attacks land with weight and honest recovery windows, so reading your opponent matters more than memorising long input strings. The wall-break mechanic is the headline addition: press someone into the edge of the arena hard enough and the stage gives way, resetting both fighters into fresh ground with the momentum on your side. Knowing when to chase a break and when to bait one becomes a layer of strategy all its own.

A Sensory Blast for Your Eyes and Ears

The hybrid 2D/3D cel-shaded look this series pioneered reaches its sharpest form here, with hand-drawn poses reconstructed in three dimensions and camera work that swings in for the big hits. Underneath it runs Ishiwatari's heavy metal soundtrack, written and performed by the same person directing the game, and it does as much to sell a comeback as the animation does.

Ways to Fight

Online versus
Take your character into ranked and casual matches against the wider player base, where the wall-break reads and spacing habits you build in training get tested by people with their own ideas about them.
Local versus
Two players, one screen, no netcode in the middle. Shared and split-screen versus is still where the loudest sessions happen, and full controller support means both sides can bring the pad they trust.
Solo
Work through the story, drill the mission mode, and chase thirty-nine achievements along the way. There is enough structured practice here to arrive at your first online match already knowing what you are doing.

Critically Acclaimed

Guilty Gear -Strive- holds a Metacritic score of 85 and close to 48,000 player reviews. IGN called it "a milestone 2D fighting game that raises the bar for anime-like fighters" at 9/10, The Gamer named it "easily the best fighting game of 2021", and Noisy Pixel scored it a perfect 10.

Pick a fighter whose silhouette you like, learn one combo, and see how far clean fundamentals carry you. The wall is waiting.
