A Hat in Time is a 3D platformer that remembers exactly why the genre mattered in the first place. You play as Hat Kid, a tiny space traveller with an enormous top hat, whose journey home stalls when her fuel spills out over the planet below. Those Time Pieces are scattered across five enormous worlds now, and getting them back means jumping, climbing, fighting and stitching your way into every corner of a place that was not expecting visitors.
A Little Girl and Her Spaceship
The setup is simple and the execution is not. Hat Kid is stranded above a world run by a Mafia of Cooks, populated by squabbling film-studio birds and haunted by the shadows of Subcon Forest, and none of them are especially interested in giving her fuel back. What follows is a journey told almost entirely through movement and character rather than cutscenes, with a tone that swings from slapstick to genuinely unsettling and back again without ever losing its footing.
Five Worlds Worth Getting Lost In
Each world is a compact, dense space rather than a sprawling map, designed so that nearly everything you can see is somewhere you can reach. Hat Kid has a layered move set out of the box: multiple jump types, wall climbing, and a hook swing that carries her over gaps, and the level design assumes you will get good at using them together. Climbing a mountain here is not a scripted sequence, it is a route you work out yourself, and the game is happy to let you find a faster one than the designers intended.
Hats, Yarn and Snappy Badges
- Magical yarn
- Rare yarn is collected across the worlds and spent stitching new hats, each of which functions as a new ability rather than a cosmetic. Finding enough of one colour is its own small quest, and the hat you unlock usually opens routes you walked past earlier without realising.
- Hats with real verbs
- The witch hat lets Hat Kid cook explosive concoctions, the wooden ghost mask lets her peek into another dimension entirely, and swapping between them mid-level is how most of the trickier collectibles are reached. They change how you read a room, not just how you look in it.
- Badges
- Badges are found, sold and traded by the locals, and they slot onto hats to push them further. Loadout space is limited, so choosing which badges to carry into a chapter is a genuine decision rather than a menu you fill in once and forget.
Every Mission Changes the Rules
The chapters refuse to settle into a rhythm. One act is a murder mystery aboard the Owl Express, where you gather clues and interrogate the passengers before naming a culprit. Another makes you band marshal of the Big Parade. Another is a stealth run through Dead Bird Studio while its owners try very hard to keep you off camera. The platforming is the constant, but what the platforming is in service of keeps shifting, and it is the reason the game stays surprising all the way through.
Built With Its Community
A Hat in Time was funded on Kickstarter by backers who wanted this specific kind of game back, and it shipped with that relationship intact: full modding support through Steam Workshop, an in-game screenshot mode for the people who wanted to photograph it, and local split-screen co-op so a second player can tag along. Years of community-made chapters, costumes and levels have accumulated since, which means the game you buy today has considerably more in it than the one that launched.
