BioShock Infinite

Digital 292

The year is 1912, and Booker DeWitt owes the wrong people far too much. His one way out is a job: travel to Columbia - a city of monuments and machine-angels suspended above the clouds - find a young woman named Elizabeth, and deliver her to New York unharmed. What begins as a simple extraction becomes one of the most talked-about stories in games, a descent through a gleaming utopia rotting from the inside and a partnership that bends the rules of reality itself.

Columbia, the City in the Sky

Columbia is a marvel built on a lie. Its boardwalks bustle with barbershop quartets, county fairs and patriotic pageantry, while beneath the bunting the self-styled prophet Zachary Comstock rules through zeal and fear, and the Vox Populi sharpen their knives for revolution. Exploring the city rewards curiosity at every turn - voxophone diaries, kinetoscope reels and quiet side streets fill in a history Columbia would rather keep hidden.

Elizabeth

Locked in a tower her whole life and watched over by the monstrous Songbird, Elizabeth is far more than an objective to escort. She picks locks, tosses Booker ammo and coins in the thick of a firefight, and tears open windows into other realities that can pull cover, weapons and allies out of thin air. Her bond with Booker carries the story from its first mystery to a finale players still debate more than a decade later.

Sky-Lines, Vigors and Old-Fashioned Firepower

Combat in Columbia plays out in three dimensions. Leap onto the sky-line rail network to outflank dug-in enemies, then hit them with a one-two punch of impossible powers and period weaponry:

  • Vigors grant abilities no soldier of 1912 should have - send a murder of crows to harry a squad, ignite the battlefield with Devil's Kiss, or possess a turret and watch it turn on its masters. Combining effects produces devastating results.
  • Weapons range from pistols and shotguns to sniper rifles and hand cannons, each upgradeable at vending machines scattered through the city, so a favorite sidearm can stay lethal from the fairgrounds to the finale.
  • Gear discovered across Columbia adds passive bonuses that shape your own playstyle, whether that favors sky-line ambushes, elemental combos or patient marksmanship.

A Challenge Worthy of a Prophet

Beyond the standard difficulty settings, 1999 Mode strips away the safety nets in tribute to an older school of shooter - resources run thin, every choice is permanent, and mistakes cost dearly. It is the definitive way to return to Columbia once the story has its hooks in you.

Board the rocket at the lighthouse, take the prophet's welcome with a grain of salt, and find out why Columbia's golden streets are spoken of in the same breath as Rapture's leaking corridors. Elizabeth is waiting.
