Battlefield 4

790

Battlefield 4 is DICE at full volume: a Frostbite 3 shooter where the map is not a backdrop but a moving part. Buildings come down, streets flood, and the ground you fought over ten minutes ago may not be there when the round ends.

Levolution Puts the Map in Play

Interactive environments react to what you do in real time. Demolish the building shielding an enemy squad, trigger a shipwreck, or flood a street to close an approach that was safe a moment earlier. These are tools rather than scripted set pieces, and the squad that reads them first usually wins the exchange. It also means a map you know inside out can still catch you out in its closing minutes.

Sixty-Four Players, One Front Line

Massive 64-player battles are the heart of Battlefield 4, and they reward playing to your strengths instead of chasing a scoreboard. Each of the four combat roles brings something the others cannot, challenging assignments unlock new weapons as you go, and the sheer scale of the maps means there is always a flank, a rooftop or a waterway that nobody is watching.

Dozens of Vehicles, Yours to Take

Air
Attack helicopters and stealth jets contest the sky over every map, turning a stalled push into a rout, or getting swatted out of it by an anti-air emplacement that saw you coming long before you saw it.
Sea
Gunboats let you lead an assault from the water, opening approaches infantry cannot reach on their own and putting sustained fire on positions that were built to face inland.
Land
Armour and transports move a squad to where the round is actually being decided, and a little C4 in the right hands still goes a very long way against anything that rolls.

The Campaign Out of Shanghai

With international tensions running high, the single-player campaign opens on the evacuation of American VIPs from Shanghai and follows your squad's fight to find its way home against the odds. It is character-driven and deliberately tight, a counterweight to the open chaos of the multiplayer, and it puts the same destructible environments to work keeping you off balance.

Why It Still Holds Up

More than a decade after release, Battlefield 4 is the entry plenty of players go back to when they want the series at its most legible: big maps, real vehicle combat, destruction that changes the tactical picture rather than just the scenery, and a playerbase that is still showing up. If you have only played the newer entries, this is the one that set the template. Pick a role, find a squad, and go drop a building on somebody.
