Remnant: From The Ashes PC Review

Remnant: From The Ashes is a post-apocalyptic looter-shooter with punishing difficulty and an emphasis on co-op gameplay. That might sound like a lot of games lately but luckily the game is more than the sum of its parts. If you are up for the challenge you'll be rewarded with one of the best co-op experiences this year and a great feeling of accomplishment after beating a difficult boss.

Introduction

Remnant: From The Ashes is a brand new third person looter-shooter that follows the reboot of the Renegade IP that launched an MMO around the same time as League of Legends. While the game has a story mode there are also multiplayer modes. A real plus if you are into that sort of thing. In fact, there's even a new type of mode called "Deathmatch," a counterpoint to the usual "Domination" of similar games. No matter which mode you choose, you’re going to have to work with your friends. Your game time is limited, especially in the story mode, and only gets more limited the more people play. If you want to get to the good stuff then you have to work with your friends.

Story

While the story is not Remnant's strongest area it is still solid enough. You play as a custom character that washes up on an island in post-apocalyptic Earth with nothing but the clothes on your back and a pretty sad sword. You will eventually meet up with a band of survivors that will take you in and provide you with better equipment. You're up against a tree-like race known as the Root. You will have to figure out how to destroy the heart of the Root if you are to have any chance of surviving the game. As said, the story is not going to win any awards but it was interesting enough to keep us playing.

Gameplay

The combat in Remnant: From The Ashes is stellar. It is fast and action packed and the co-op option takes that to an even higher level. Swinging a heavy melee weapon to smash through enemies feels just right. There's no block button, so mastering the dodge-roll is important. There are no classes in Remnant, but at the start you pick one of three different archetypes. This sets your starting weapons, armor, and weapon mod. You will discover new weapons and gear scattered throughout the world as you play, but most of your loot is actually crafted from the materials boss monsters drop. This process will form the majority of your looting experience.

Conclusion

Remnant: From The Ashes takes all the best qualities from games like Dark Souls, Dead Space, Fallout, and Left 4 Dead it and makes something that not only reminds you of those games but also is something completely different on it's own. As long as you're up for the challenge we can wholeheartedly recommend Remnant: From The Ashes, especially if you're into co-op. Now where is my tree trimmer?
