Ubisoft Chengdu, registered as Chengdu Ubisoft Software Co., Ltd., is one of the internal development studios of Ubisoft, the French publisher headquartered in Saint-Mandé. It was founded in 2008 in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, as Ubisoft's second studio in China, twelve years after Ubisoft Shanghai opened in 1996 and gave the company its first foothold in the country. From the start it took shape as a team that could carry smaller projects of its own while lending its hands to larger productions elsewhere in the group. That support role ran through its early years: the studio contributed to Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game, the retro-styled brawler Ubisoft released alongside the film, and handled Chinese localization for titles such as Might & Magic: Duel of Champions, the collectible card game built on Ubisoft's long-running fantasy series. On its own account it led Monkey King Escape, a mobile game drawing on the most famous figure in Chinese folklore, and produced a Rabbids party game for the Chinese market that never released outside the country.
The studio's best-known work is its run of licensed casual games, each a familiar table classic rebuilt for consoles and PC. Scrabble arrived in 2013, followed by Wheel of Fortune and, in 2016, UNO, the digital version of Mattel's card game, which reached Steam on January 3, 2017. UNO turned out to be the project with the longest life. Ubisoft has kept it supported for years with add-on theme packs and alternate rule sets: UNO FLIP!, with its two-sided deck; UNO Fenyx's Quest, themed on Ubisoft's own Immortals Fenyx Rising; Just Dance and Rayman theme cards; and later Show 'Em No Mercy and Party Mania. Nearly a decade on, UNO still carries a player base on Steam, an unusual outcome for a card game adaptation and a fair measure of how well the studio got the pace and the shared-screen play right. That is the reason the collection is worth a look today: a studio that specializes in getting a well-known ruleset onto a screen without losing the thing that made people play it at the table in the first place.
