United Front Games was a Canadian video game development studio based in Vancouver, founded in 2007 by a team drawn from some of the most accomplished open-world studios in the business: EA Black Box, Rockstar Vancouver, Radical Entertainment and Volition. That pedigree shaped everything the studio went on to make. Its first official title was ModNation Racers, a kart racer built around user-generated content that entered production in 2008 and launched in May 2010, giving players the tools to design their own drivers, karts and tracks and share them with a wider community. The game that would define its legacy followed in August 2012. Sleeping Dogs became a critical and commercial success, dropping players into a dense, neon-lit Hong Kong as an undercover officer working his way inside the triads, with hard-hitting martial arts combat, high-speed driving and a crime story that drew on everything its open-world veterans had learned. That November the studio returned to the track with LittleBigPlanet Karting for PlayStation 3, made with help from series creators Media Molecule. Across its lifetime the studio shipped work for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One and Windows PC.
Success brought ambition and turbulence in equal measure. Work on a Sleeping Dogs sequel began in early 2013, but plans were scrapped late that year before the project went into full production. The studio's technical expertise was in demand elsewhere, and United Front worked on the Xbox One version of Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition before collaborating with 343 Industries on Halo: The Master Chief Collection, published in November 2014. In September 2014 the studio announced Triad Wars, an online open-world action-adventure game set in the Sleeping Dogs Hong Kong universe and originally targeted for an early 2015 release on PC. That October it brought its signature game to PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition, published by Square Enix, with the Mac version ported by Feral Interactive. Triad Wars never reached a full launch, and its open beta closed in January 2016. On October 17, 2016, United Front Games announced its closure, less than a month after its online multiplayer brawler Smash+Grab had entered Steam Early Access, and the studio gave no further details. Its legacy lives on through Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition, still the fullest expression of what this team of open-world veterans set out to build, and still playable today on Windows and Mac.
