The first game in the Fallout series was released for PC by Interplay back in 1997. It is considered to be the spiritual successor to Wasteland, one of the earliest post-apocalyptic role-playing games. The first two releases were overhead role-playing games, then when Bethesda took over the series with Fallout 3, it changed to a 1st person view and added in real-time combat and a fully 3D world.
While the gameplay changed Fallout 3 still retained elements from the original series. The series is very popular with each new release rating highly with critics and selling well. Like Bethesda's other popular first-person series, The Elder Scrolls, the Fallout series offers large areas of the wasteland to explore with many quests to complete along with many ways to customize the game to suit your style.
