SUPERHOT Team is the Łódź, Poland studio behind one of the most distinctive ideas the first-person shooter has produced: time moves only when you move. That rule first appeared in a three-level prototype built in August 2013 for the 7 Day FPS Challenge game jam, and a browser-based playable demonstration released the following month drew far more attention than a one-week jam entry usually earns. The team turned that momentum into a Kickstarter campaign in May 2014 that sought $100,000, met its goal within the first day and closed with more than $230,000 pledged, funding the expansion of the jam concept into a full release. The company itself, SUPERHOT SP. Z O.O., was incorporated in 2015, after the prototype and the crowdfunding had already proven the idea. Piotr Iwanicki serves as director and designer and remains the studio's public lead, working alongside producers Marek Bączyński and Tom Kaczmarczyk, programmers Krzysztof Tracz and Jakub Witczak, art director Marcin Surma, artist Konrad Kaca, writer Cezary Skorupka and composer Karl Flodin. What separates SUPERHOT from a crowded genre is that its central mechanic turns every encounter into a puzzle: with enemies and bullets frozen until the player commits to an action, each room becomes a problem of positioning and sequencing rather than reflexes, and the stark white-and-red presentation strips away everything that does not serve that idea.
SUPERHOT released on February 25, 2016 for Windows, Mac and Linux, described by the studio as thirty months in the making, and it went on to collect a plethora of awards and nominations from industry experts. SUPERHOT VR followed on December 5, 2016, rebuilding the concept around physical movement, and it became the bigger commercial success: by April 2019 it had sold more than 800,000 units, overtaking the original game, and in late 2019 the VR version brought in more than US$2 million of revenue across all VR platforms within two weeks. SUPERHOT: MIND CONTROL DELETE completed the trio of releases in 2020. Throughout, the studio has developed and self-published its own games rather than signing with an outside publisher, and in August 2019 it established SUPERHOT Presents, a funding initiative that backs other independent games, turning the position it earned through crowdfunding into support for the next generation of small teams. That arc, from a game jam entry to a self-funded multi-title franchise and now a backer of other independent developers, is why the catalogue matters to players today: it is a working example of a single sharp idea carried through with discipline. PJ's Games currently stocks SUPERHOT for PC on Steam under this collection.
