Founded in November 1999 by Dr. Ian Lane Davis as Mad Doc Software, Rockstar New England began as an ambitious Massachusetts-based studio rooted in cutting-edge artificial intelligence and game technology innovation. Led by Davis, a Carnegie Mellon-trained AI and robotics expert who had honed his skills as a technical director at Activision, the Andover studio quickly established itself as a specialist in strategy and simulation games, creating acclaimed titles like Star Trek: Armada II, the critically successful Empire Earth II, and Dungeon Siege: Legends of Aranna. With their proprietary Mad3D Game Engine and MadAI technologies, the studio sold over 10 million copies of their various titles worldwide and earned recognition including Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences nominations for their innovative approach to real-time strategy gaming. After successfully developing Bully: Scholarship Edition for Rockstar Vancouver's original PlayStation 2 hit, the studio caught Rockstar's attention and was acquired by Take-Two Interactive in April 2008 for over $6 million, officially becoming Rockstar New England. Though the studio initially worked on a sequel to Bully before its developers were reassigned to support other major Rockstar projects like Max Payne 3, Rockstar New England represents the company's commitment to acquiring specialized technical talent and expanding their development capabilities across diverse gaming genres and platforms.
