Remedy Entertainment is a Finnish video game developer and publisher headquartered in Espoo, internationally celebrated for cinematic, story-driven action games that pair inventive gameplay mechanics with bold, surreal, and deeply authored narratives. The studio was founded on August 18, 1995 by members of the Finnish demoscene group Future Crew, including Samuli Syvähuoko and Markus Mäki, bringing the demoscene's passion for pushing technical boundaries into commercial game development. After debuting in 1996 with a top-down combat racing game, Remedy achieved international breakthrough in 2001 with a noir-inflected third-person shooter that popularized the "bullet time" slow-motion mechanic and paired it with graphic-novel storytelling, establishing the studio's signature fusion of cinematic presentation and satisfying action. Remedy later sold that intellectual property to Take-Two Interactive and turned its attention to original creations, partnering with Microsoft on a psychological thriller in 2010 and a time-manipulation action game in 2016 that blended live-action television with interactive storytelling, all shaped by longtime creative director Sam Lake, whose writing and on-screen presence have become inseparable from the studio's identity.
Remedy's technical foundation rests on its proprietary Northlight engine, which enables the studio's distinctive lighting, physics-driven destruction, and atmospheric environments. Following its 2017 listing on the Helsinki stock exchange, the studio released an acclaimed 2019 supernatural action-adventure set inside a shape-shifting government building, later reacquiring full rights to that franchise and linking its universe with the studio's earlier horror storytelling to form a shared "Remedy Connected Universe." A critically lauded 2023 survival-horror sequel reinforced the studio's reputation for artistic ambition, while Remedy also took on remakes of its early action franchise in partnership with Rockstar Games, and expanded into self-publishing. The 2025 underperformance of a cooperative multiplayer spin-off prompted a profit warning and the departure of CEO Tero Virtala, with co-founder Mäki serving as interim chief before former Electronic Arts and CCP Games executive Jean-Charles Gaudechon took the helm on March 1, 2026, tasked with steering the studio toward profitable growth. Employing nearly 400 people and publicly traded on Nasdaq Helsinki, Remedy Entertainment continues developing premium, narrative-first action experiences, including a new entry in its supernatural action franchise, while exploring film and television adaptations to broaden the reach of its worlds.
