Red Storm Entertainment is an American video game developer and Ubisoft studio based in Cary, North Carolina, in the heart of the state's Research Triangle, renowned as the studio that defined the modern tactical shooter genre. Founded in November 1996 by best-selling techno-thriller novelist Tom Clancy and retired British Royal Navy officer Doug Littlejohns, the company grew out of the game-development division of local software firm Virtus Corporation, following a submarine-simulation collaboration between Clancy and Virtus that had been years in the making. Taking its name from one of Clancy's novels, with Clancy installed as chairman and Littlejohns as president and chief executive, the fledgling studio assembled an initial team of roughly nineteen and set out to translate the authenticity, realism, and geopolitical tension of Clancy's fiction into interactive entertainment. Its 1998 breakthrough established the template for realistic, team-based tactical combat—emphasizing careful planning, lethal consequences, and squad coordination over run-and-gun action—pioneering a subgenre that would prove enormously influential and cementing Red Storm's reputation as an industry leader.
Building on that success, Red Storm expanded into squad-based military shooters that further advanced cooperative and online multiplayer design, developing the foundations of franchises that became pillars of the broader Tom Clancy brand. Ubisoft acquired the studio in August 2000, integrating Red Storm as a cornerstone of its Tom Clancy-branded portfolio and steadily transitioning it toward a collaborative co-development role supporting some of the publisher's largest franchises, including open-world shooters and online action-RPG properties, while also exploring emerging platforms through early virtual reality titles. Following the death of founder Tom Clancy in 2013 and the 2022 retirement of long-serving co-founder and managing director Steve Reid—succeeded by Elizabeth Loverso—the studio has continued operating from Cary with roughly 180 employees, navigating shifting production priorities within its parent company while drawing on nearly three decades of expertise in the realistic tactical gameplay it helped originate, remaining a key studio within Ubisoft's global network.
