Amplitude Studios is a French video game developer based in Paris, recognized as one of Europe's foremost specialists in 4X and strategy games and a pioneer of community-driven development. The studio was founded in January 2011 by former Ubisoft developers Romain de Waubert de Genlis and Mathieu Girard, who set out to create deep, beautifully crafted strategy experiences while involving players directly in the creative process. That ambition took shape through the studio's "Games2Gether" program, an open-development initiative inviting its community to vote on design decisions, contribute feedback during early access, and help shape content across production, a collaborative philosophy that became central to Amplitude's identity. The studio built its reputation through an interconnected science-fantasy universe spanning space-exploration and fantasy-world 4X strategy games, notable for asymmetric factions, rich lore, and striking art direction, alongside inventive spin-offs that blended roguelike dungeon-crawling with tower-defense mechanics.
Seeking broader resources and the chance to work alongside other strategy specialists, Amplitude was acquired by Sega in June 2016 and joined Sega Europe's family of studios, where it continued expanding its signature universe before tackling its most ambitious project, a sweeping historical 4X strategy game in which players guide civilizations across the ages by blending cultures from different eras. Co-founder Girard departed in 2018 to launch his own studio, while de Waubert de Genlis remained at the helm. In November 2024, as Sega concluded a restructuring of its European operations, Amplitude regained its independence through a management buyout by nearly forty of its senior leaders and employees, returning the studio to its roots while Sega supported a smooth transition. Now a privately held, independent studio of roughly 170 people, Amplitude Studios continues developing new entries in its flagship strategy universe from its Paris headquarters, sustaining the depth, artistry, and close community collaboration that have defined it since its founding.
