Techland is a Polish video game developer and publisher headquartered in Wrocław, recognized as one of the country's most successful and enduring studios and a specialist in atmospheric, open-world action experiences. Founded in 1991 by Paweł Marchewka in the entrepreneurial vacuum that followed the collapse of Poland's communist economy, the company began—much like its compatriot CD Projekt around the same period—as a distributor and translator of foreign software for the nascent Polish market, channeling the profits from that business into its true ambition of original game development. Techland released its first in-house title in the mid-1990s and steadily built both commercial momentum and technical capability, developing its own proprietary engine technology that would underpin its productions for decades and allow the studio to pursue increasingly ambitious first-person action projects as it grew from a modest domestic operation into an internationally competitive developer.
The studio established its identity through a series of well-received franchises, first with a stylish Western-themed first-person shooter series before achieving global breakthrough success with open-world survival experiences built around visceral melee combat, cooperative play, and hostile environments—most notably its flagship first-person franchise combining fluid parkour traversal with day-and-night survival horror, which grew into a long-running property supported by extensive post-launch content and sequels. In 2016 Techland expanded into third-party publishing to bring outside developers' titles to market, while continuing to self-publish its own increasingly high-budget productions and opening additional studio locations to support them. Having remained privately held and founder-led for over three decades under CEO Paweł Marchewka, growing to more than 550 employees, Techland entered a new chapter in 2024 when Chinese technology and entertainment giant Tencent acquired a majority stake in the company, providing substantial resources for future growth while the studio continues operating from Wrocław, advancing the proprietary technology and open-world action expertise that have made it a cornerstone of the Polish games industry.
