Ubisoft Sofia is the Bulgarian development studio of French publisher Ubisoft, founded in Sofia in 2006 with a team of just 11 developers. It was Ubisoft's second development studio in Eastern Europe, set up on the strength of the Ubisoft Romania team's success, and its early years read like a tour of the publisher's catalog from that era. The studio's first release was CSI: 3 Dimensions of Murder on PlayStation 2, and it went on to work on Rayman Raving Rabbids and Rayman Raving Rabbids 2, build casual Nintendo DS titles such as Imagine: Fashion Designer and Style Lab: Makeover, and develop two entries in the long-running Chessmaster series - Chessmaster: The Art of Learning for DS and PSP in 2007 and Chessmaster Live in 2008. Alongside Rabbids Go Home in 2009, Sofia handled Prince of Persia Classic in 2007 and the Prince of Persia Trilogy HD collection for PlayStation 3, released across 2010 and 2011, then closed out its first chapter with Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars in 2011, a turn-based tactics take on the Ghost Recon series for the Nintendo 3DS.
Assassin's Creed became the studio's defining series. Sofia led Assassin's Creed III: Liberation, the 2012 PlayStation Vita adventure, and brought it to a wider audience with Liberation HD in 2014 on PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade and PC. After serving as an associate studio on Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag, the team led Assassin's Creed Rogue, co-developed with Ubisoft Kyiv and released in 2014 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, with the PC version following on March 10, 2015. Sofia later produced Assassin's Creed Rogue Remastered for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2018. Since then the studio has been a constant presence on Ubisoft's biggest projects, co-developing Assassin's Creed Origins and its expansion The Curse of the Pharaohs, Tom Clancy's The Division 2 and its Episode 2, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Assassin's Creed Mirage and Assassin's Creed Shadows. Along the way it led the Valhalla expansion Dawn of Ragnarok in 2022, Mirage for iPhone and iPad in 2024, and the macOS version of Shadows. Named Best Workplace in the Game Dev Industry in Bulgaria in 2016 and Best Tech Place to Work at the Global Technology Awards in 2019, Ubisoft Sofia now employs more than 220 people, marks its 20th anniversary in 2026, and operates within Vantage Studios, the Ubisoft subsidiary dedicated to Assassin's Creed, Far Cry and Rainbow Six. For players, Assassin's Creed Rogue remains the clearest showcase of what the team can do: a darker, Templar's-eye view of the Seven Years' War, told through Shay Patrick Cormac's turn against the Brotherhood that trained him.
