Stardock Entertainment is the games arm of Stardock Corporation, the Michigan software company founded by Brad Wardell in 1991. Stardock's roots are unusual for a game publisher: it began as an OS/2 software house, shipped its first strategy game - the original Galactic Civilizations - for OS/2 in the mid-1990s, and built its commercial backbone on Windows desktop customization software such as Object Desktop, WindowBlinds and Fences. That self-funded software business gave the games division a rare independence, and Wardell used it to champion PC-first, DRM-light publishing at a time when the industry was moving the other way. Galactic Civilizations II (2006) became one of the defining independent PC releases of its era, and in 2008 Stardock published Ironclad Games' Sins of a Solar Empire, the acclaimed RT4X hybrid whose standalone expansion Rebellion and 2024 sequel it publishes to this day.
The catalogue since then reads as a sustained commitment to the strategy genre. Stardock developed the Galactic Civilizations III and IV entries in its flagship 4X series, the election-strategy perennial The Political Machine, and the fantasy 4X line that ran from Elemental: War of Magic through Fallen Enchantress and Sorcerer King. Ashes of the Singularity (2016), built with Oxide Games on the multi-core Nitrous engine, pushed on-screen unit counts into the tens of thousands and became a fixture of CPU benchmarking. Stardock also acquired the Star Control rights in 2013 and returned the series to space with Star Control: Origins (2018), and publishes Offworld Trading Company, Mohawk Games' economic RTS. Based in Plymouth, Michigan, Stardock remains one of the longest-running independent names in PC strategy - a publisher whose releases are built around depth, moddability and long post-launch support.
