343 Industries is an American video game developer based in Redmond, Washington, created by Microsoft in 2007 to serve as the dedicated steward of one of Xbox's most iconic science-fiction shooter franchises. The studio was formed after that franchise's original developer, Bungie, separated from Microsoft to become independent, leaving Microsoft to build an internal team capable of protecting and expanding the property's games, novels, comics, animation, and transmedia universe. Led from its founding by Bonnie Ross, who guided the studio for fifteen years, and named in a nod to a memorable character from the franchise's lore, 343 Industries initially focused on franchise management and supporting projects before assuming full development responsibility for new mainline entries. Its first lead release in 2012 opened a new narrative trilogy for the series, followed by an ambitious collection that brought the franchise's earlier campaigns together with remastered visuals, and a later free-to-play multiplayer model paired with an open-ended campaign—work that reflected the studio's mandate to modernize a beloved shooter while honoring its tight arena combat and sweeping military science-fiction storytelling.
The studio's tenure was marked by both reverence and turbulence, as it balanced enormous fan expectations against troubled launches, shifting live-service strategies, and repeated leadership changes, with Ross departing in 2022 and Microsoft layoffs reducing the team in 2023. In October 2024, the studio rebranded itself as Halo Studios under head Pierre Hintze, announcing a move from its in-house engine to Unreal Engine to accelerate production and improve quality, and soon delivered a modern remake of the series' original campaign. That era shifted again in September 2026, when Microsoft's sweeping Xbox restructuring cut 268 roles across Halo Studios, other first-party teams, and management, and handed development of the franchise's next mainline entry to Activision through a new, purpose-built team separate from its flagship military shooter work. A smaller Halo Studios team continues operating from Redmond, focused on supporting existing games, the player community, and competitive esports, preserving nearly two decades of institutional knowledge about one of the industry's defining science-fiction universes as its stewardship enters a new chapter.
