Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine puts you inside the power armor of Captain Titus, a veteran of the Ultramarines chapter, as a millions-strong Ork horde tears into the Forge World of Graia. Relic Entertainment, the studio behind Dawn of War, built a third-person action game around a simple idea: a Space Marine does not take cover, he takes the fight to the enemy. Bolter in one hand, chainsword in the other, you are the Emperor's answer to a planet that cannot be allowed to fall.
Hold the Line on Graia
Forge Worlds are the planet-sized factories of the Imperium, and Graia builds the Warlord-class Titans that decide wars. With an Imperial liberation fleet still en route, Titus, the stoic Sergeant Sidonus and the young, by-the-book Leandros are dropped in to hold key locations until reinforcements arrive. What starts as a holding action against the Ork Warboss Grimskull turns into something far darker as an Inquisitor's experimental power source draws the attention of the Chaos Sorcerer Nemeroth and his Chaos Space Marines. Alongside Lieutenant Mira and the surviving Imperial Guard, Titus has to decide how far a Space Marine can bend the Codex Astartes to save a world.
Combat Built for a Space Marine
There is no cover system in Space Marine, and that is the point. Ranged and melee weapons are always both in hand, and you swap between them mid-fight without a menu. Health does not regenerate on its own: you stun a weakened enemy and execute it in a brutal animation, and the kill restores you. The result is a rhythm no other shooter of its era had, where the safest place in a firefight is usually right in the middle of the Ork mob. Fill the Fury meter and you can trigger slow-motion aiming for headshots or wade in with melee strikes that fell Nobs and Chaos Marines alike. Armor upgrades and weapon unlocks arrive through a straightforward progression system, and the game never asks you to be anything less than a seven-foot walking tank.
Weaponry of the 41st Millennium
- Bolter, Stalker Bolter, Storm Bolter
- The Space Marine's signature weapon fires mass-reactive shells that explode inside the target. The standard bolter handles most fights, the stalker bolter adds a scope for picking off Ork Shootas across the manufactorum floors, and the heavy bolter turns corridors into kill zones.
- Plasma Gun, Melta Gun, Lascannon
- When Greenskin numbers stop being the problem and Chaos armor is, the heavier tools come out. The plasma gun charges for a devastating burst, the melta gun vaporizes anything at close range, and the lascannon exists for the moments when one shot has to end an argument.
- Chainsword, Power Axe, Thunder Hammer
- Melee is not a backup in Space Marine. The chainsword is fast and always available, the power axe trades speed for weight, and the thunder hammer flattens groups with every swing. Each one changes your execution animations and the way you approach a crowd.
- Jump Pack Assaults
- Selected missions hand Titus an Assault Marine jump pack. Rocketing skyward and slamming back down into a pack of Orks with a thunder hammer is one of the most satisfying things the game lets you do, and it turns whole battlefields into landing zones.
Multiplayer and Exterminatus
Beyond the campaign, Space Marine carries a full online component that pits the loyalist chapters against the Traitor Legions.
- 8 vs 8 Versus: Form a Space Marine squad or a Chaos Space Marine warband and fight across Annihilation and Seize Ground modes. Choose the Tactical, Devastator or Assault Marine class, each with its own loadouts and movement style, and earn experience to unlock new weapons, perks and armor pieces.
- Armor Customizer: Build your own Marine from the chapter colors and armor components you unlock as you rank up, whether you are painting yourself in Ultramarines blue or assembling a warband in the livery of the Black Legion.
- Exterminatus Co-op: Four players hold out against escalating waves of Orks and Chaos forces across two scenarios, Assault on Hab Center Andreas and Escape From Kalkys Facility. Global leaderboards track your scores, and the experience you earn counts toward your multiplayer ranks.
The Grim Darkness, Done Right
Relic had already earned Games Workshop's trust with Dawn of War, and it shows in every detail here: the scale of the Titan foundries, the guttural Ork chatter, the weight of ceramite on stone, and a soundtrack that swells with choral menace whenever Chaos shows its hand. Mark Strong voices Titus with the calm authority of a warrior who has seen ten thousand battles and expects to see ten thousand more. Space Marine remains the game that showed what the Adeptus Astartes feel like from the inside. Draw your chainsword, Captain. Graia will not hold itself.
