Sonic Generations

Digital 29,00

Sonic Generations is Sonic Team's twentieth-anniversary celebration, and it takes the idea literally: a mysterious force tears holes in time, dragging Sonic and his friends into a blank White Space where the greatest zones of his history sit frozen and drained of colour. To put things right, Modern Sonic teams up with his shorter, rounder 1991 self, and every stage in the game is built twice, once for each hedgehog. This edition includes the Casino Night DLC at no extra cost, so the pinball stage inspired by Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is part of the package from day one.

Two Hedgehogs, One Timeline

The split is the whole design. Classic Sonic plays side-on, with the spin dash, the rolling momentum and the tight platforming of the Mega Drive games. He does not talk, he does not home in on enemies, and he lives or dies by how well you read a slope. Modern Sonic gets the full 3D toolkit that Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colors refined: the Boost that turns him into a blur, the homing attack, quick-steps, drifts and rail grinding, with stages that shift between behind-the-back sprints and 2D sections without a cut.

Because each zone has a separate act for each character, the same location becomes two different levels. Chemical Plant as Classic Sonic is a careful climb through rising purple water; as Modern Sonic it is a high-speed chase along pipes and conveyor belts. Clearing both acts and rescuing the friend held in each zone unlocks a set of challenge acts, which remix the stage with new rules and a partner such as Tails, Knuckles or Amy along for the run.

Nine Zones From Three Eras

The Classic era
Green Hill from the original Sonic the Hedgehog, Chemical Plant from Sonic 2 and Sky Sanctuary from Sonic & Knuckles are rebuilt in HD with their checkerboard cliffs, loops and floating ruins intact. Their soundtracks return as new arrangements, and hearing the Chemical Plant theme kick in over a fully modelled factory is one of the game's best moments.
The Dreamcast era
Speed Highway from Sonic Adventure and City Escape from Sonic Adventure 2 bring back the skyscraper dashes and the runaway truck, while Seaside Hill from Sonic Heroes rolls out its coastal ruins. This is the stretch where Modern Sonic's Boost feels most at home, and where Classic Sonic gets to run through places he never visited the first time.
The Modern era
Crisis City from Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Rooftop Run from Sonic Unleashed and Planet Wisp from Sonic Colors round out the timeline, complete with the tornado-torn ruins, the tiled European rooftops and the alien construction site. Each is reworked to suit the character you are playing, so even the newest stages feel fresh from the Classic side.

Rivals, Bosses and the Chaos Emeralds

  • Rival battles pit you against Metal Sonic on Stardust Speedway, Shadow on the Final Rush rails and Silver in the streets of Crisis City. Each is a straight race or duel that plays on the rival's own signature abilities rather than a standard boss arena.
  • The boss roster reaches across the series too, from the Death Egg Robot and Perfect Chaos to the Egg Dragoon, each restaged with the modern engine and finished with the kind of set-piece camera work the 2D originals could only hint at.
  • Winning those fights earns Chaos Emeralds, and gathering the full set opens the way to the Time Eater, the creature behind the time holes. Along the way, Red Star Rings hidden through every act and a skill shop of unlockable abilities give completionists plenty to chase after the credits.

The Casino Night Pinball Stage

The included Casino Night DLC adds a self-contained pinball table modelled on the neon-lit zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Sonic is the ball, flippers and bumpers do the rest, and racking up rings rewards you with the flashing-lights slot machine feel that made the original stage a favourite. It is a compact extra rather than a full zone, but it fits the anniversary theme neatly and is a good place to unwind between the harder challenge acts.

A Celebration That Plays Well

Plenty of anniversary releases lean on nostalgia alone. Sonic Generations earns its place because both halves are genuinely good Sonic games: the Classic acts have the best 2D level design the series had produced in years, and the Modern acts are the Boost formula at its most confident. The PC conversion by Devil's Details carries the stereoscopic 3D presentation across as well. If you have ever wanted to see where Sonic came from and where he ended up in a single afternoon, this is the game that lets you do it, spin dash first.
