Insurgency

Insurgency is the standalone follow-up to New World Interactive's award-winning Source mod, and it keeps everything that made the original a cult favorite: no crosshair, no room for error, and a team that lives or dies by how well it moves together. Security forces and Insurgents fight over strongholds, weapon caches and high value targets across the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia, in a shooter where a single round usually ends the argument.

Combat Without a Safety Net

The first thing you notice in Insurgency is what is missing. There is no crosshair painted on the screen, so you aim down the sights or fire from the hip and live with the result. The free-aim system lets your weapon drift within the frame instead of snapping to the center, and heavy suppression effects blur and shake your view when rounds crack past, which makes covering fire genuinely useful rather than a waste of ammunition. Over 40 weapons with a deep set of attachments cover everything from AKs and M16s to shotguns, sniper rifles and rocket launchers, all tuned for realistic handling rather than arcade balance.

Before each life you spend supply points on your loadout, and every choice has a cost. Heavier armor and extra magazines slow you down and drain stamina, while a lighter kit lets you sprint and flank but leaves you exposed. The simplified HUD stays out of the way so your attention lands on sightlines, doorways and the sound of footsteps on the floor above you.

Multiplayer Built Around Objectives

Insurgency's competitive modes support up to 32 players and share a common thread: reinforcements are earned, not given. Teams that secure objectives keep spawning, and teams that scatter run dry.

Push
Attackers must capture three territorial objectives in sequence, gaining extra time and reinforcements with each one, then destroy a final cache while the defenders make a one-life last stand. It is the definitive Insurgency experience and the mode most servers run.
Firefight
Three objectives, one per team plus a neutral point, and your side only respawns when it secures one of them. Take everything or eliminate the enemy to win. Every life matters here, so the tension builds round by round.
Skirmish
Territorial control with a twist: each team also guards a supply cache that keeps reinforcement waves coming. Once both caches fall and the waves are spent, the match collapses into a sudden-death Firefight.
Ambush
One team escorts a high value target armed only with a silenced pistol to an extraction point, while the other does whatever it takes to stop them. The HVT can scavenge a weapon from the fallen, which makes every route decision a gamble.
Strike, Occupy, Infiltrate, Flashpoint and Elimination
Cache demolition, king-of-the-hill control, a capture-the-flag variant built on intel, a fight for the center and a strict single-life showdown round out the rotation, each rewarding a different kind of coordination.

Cooperative Modes for Your Squad

Five co-op modes let you and your friends take on AI opponents with the same lethality rules that govern the competitive game.

  • Checkpoint sends your squad through mission objectives in sequence against AI enemies, and each objective you complete brings back anyone who fell along the way. It is the ideal introduction for a new group.
  • Hunt scatters Insurgents through the map and gives your team one life to eliminate every target and destroy the weapons cache. Slow, methodical clearing is the only way through.
  • Survival puts you on the Insurgent side against endless, escalating waves of Security forces on night maps. Reaching safehouse objectives earns supply for better weapons and respawns dead teammates.
  • Outpost has you defending your supply cache against wave after wave of attackers, with reinforcements for your squad arriving after each wave you hold.
  • Conquer asks you to capture and defend objectives while destroying enemy caches to thin their numbers, blending territorial control with the pressure of a counterattack.

Squads, Roles and Voices

Insurgency organizes teams into squads built on role-based classes, and the classes are asymmetrical: Security and Insurgents get different weapons, equipment and specialists, so switching sides changes how you fight. Communication runs through a squad-based system with 3D VOIP, which means friendly players nearby can hear you, and so can enemies within earshot. Shouting an enemy position across an open courtyard can give away your own. An overhead map tracks objectives and teammate positions, and the SDK-driven scripting lets server owners tailor the rules to their community.

Maps, Mods and Servers

Sixteen maps, each playable in day and night versions, span cramped urban streets, dusty compounds and mountain villages, with darkness turning familiar routes into something far more dangerous. New World Interactive supported the game with free content updates that added weapons, modes, maps and features over the years, and the community carried it further through the Insurgency SDK and Steam Workshop, where custom maps and content remain a click away. Offline practice with bots is available in every mode, and dedicated server support means the best matches are often the ones players host themselves.

If you have ever wished a shooter would trust you to aim, listen and think for yourself, this is it. Pick a squad, check your corners and see how long you can hold the objective.
