PUBG Corporation

PUBG Corporation is the Seoul-based studio that built PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS and, with it, turned battle royale from a mod scene into a genre. Its roots are in Ginno Games, a small Korean developer founded in 2009 by Kim Chang-han that Bluehole acquired in 2015 and renamed Bluehole Ginno Games. The following year the studio hired Brendan Greene - the Irish designer known online as PlayerUnknown, whose ARMA mods and work on H1Z1's King of the Kill had defined the last-man-standing format - as creative director, and gave a team of a few dozen developers roughly a year to build a standalone game around his ideas. PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS entered Steam Early Access on March 23, 2017, sold in the millions within weeks, and left Early Access on December 21, 2017 having already set the all-time Steam record for concurrent players, a mark above three million that still stands. Bluehole spun the team out as PUBG Corporation in 2017 to run the game as its own company, with Kim Chang-han as CEO.

The studio spent the following years turning a breakout hit into a long-running service: new maps from the desert of Miramar and the jungle of Sanhok to the snowfields of Vikendi, the Survivor Pass seasons, console releases on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and the PUBG Mobile and PUBG Lite spin-offs that carried the brand to hundreds of millions of players. It also fought the game's two persistent problems, cheating and a reputation for rough performance, with successive anti-cheat and engine overhauls. In December 2020 parent company Krafton merged PUBG Corporation into itself, and the team continues as PUBG Studios, the internal Krafton studio that still runs Battlegrounds today - including the January 2022 move to free to play that reset the game's player counts upward. For players, the studio's catalogue is essentially one game and its offshoots, but it is the game that every other battle royale is measured against.

PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS - PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS since its 2021 rebrand - is the game that turned battle royale into a genre. Up to 100 players parachute onto an island with nothing, scavenge for weapons, armour and vehicles, and fight to be the last one standing while a shrinking blue zone herds everyone toward the same patch of ground. It has been free to play since January 2022, and nearly a decade of updates later it remains the most deliberate, tactical version of the format.

Land, loot, survive

Every match opens with the same decision: a quiet stretch on the edge of the map with thin loot and time to gear up, or a hot drop into a dense town where the first fight starts the moment your boots touch the ground. What you find shapes the round - a suppressed rifle and a level-three vest set up one kind of game, a shotgun and a frying pan another - and once the zone begins to close, every move toward the circle is a gamble on who else is heading the same way.

Maps with their own rhythm

PUBG's rotation is built from maps that play nothing alike. Erangel's rolling fields, military base and coastal towns still set the template; Miramar's desert stretches fights out to long sightlines; Sanhok's compact jungle forces early, constant contact; Vikendi's snow rewards patience and sound discipline; and later additions like Taego, Deston and Rondo each bring their own pace and traversal tricks. Learning where the loot is, where the chokepoints form and where a vehicle is worth the noise is half the game.

Gunplay that rewards patience

Bullet drop, distinct recoil patterns and a deep attachment system mean every weapon handles differently, and the difference between a stock rifle and a well-built one is real. Care Packages dangle the best gear in the open for anyone bold enough to run for them. Add vehicles that can turn a rotation into a chase, squads that live or die on communication, and the choice of first- or third-person perspective, and no two engagements resolve the same way.

More than the classic drop

Beyond the signature 100-player match in solo, duo or squad, there is Team Deathmatch for warming up your aim, a rotating Arcade of experimental modes, Ranked play for the competitive, seasonal events that reshape maps for a few weeks at a time, and custom lobbies for running your own rules with friends. Optional purchases are cosmetic - outfits, weapon skins and the seasonal pass - and nothing in the loot pool is sold.

Worth knowing before you jump

PUBG is an online game with a learning curve: early rounds tend to end abruptly, and the skills that matter - positioning, patience, knowing when not to shoot - take a few evenings to settle in. That slow build is exactly why a win here feels different from a win anywhere else. It costs nothing to find out for yourself - drop in, land somewhere quiet, and see how long you last.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0875/3268/files/card-playerunknowns-battlegrounds-pc-game.jpg?v=1787457116
