Funcom

Funcom is one of the oldest game studios still operating in the Nordic region, founded in Oslo, Norway in 1993 by a small group of developers that included Gaute Godager, who would go on to direct the company's two defining online worlds. The early years were spent on console work for larger publishers, licensed titles and ports across the Mega Drive, SNES and PlayStation, including the kart racer Speed Freaks, while the studio built the technical base for something far more ambitious. That ambition surfaced in 1999 with The Longest Journey, Ragnar Tørnquist's point-and-click adventure about April Ryan and the twin worlds of Stark and Arcadia, still cited as one of the genre's finest scripts. Two years later Funcom shipped Anarchy Online, the first science-fiction MMORPG and a landmark for reasons both good and bad: a launch so unstable it became an industry cautionary tale, followed by years of steady improvement, an early experiment in free, ad-supported play, and a community that keeps Rubi-Ka running to this day. Funcom listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange in December 2005, Dreamfall: The Longest Journey continued April's story in 2006, and in 2008 Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures gave the company its first taste of the Robert E. Howard license, opening to the strongest sales in its history before settling into a long life as the free-to-play Age of Conan: Unchained.

The 2010s tested the company. The Secret World, Tørnquist's modern-day occult MMO, launched in 2012 to critical warmth and commercial disappointment, forcing deep layoffs and a restructuring that trimmed the studio's footprint and left the Oslo and Durham, North Carolina teams carrying the business, and LEGO Minifigures Online, a 2014 attempt at a family MMO, was shut down within two years. Rui Casais, previously chief technology officer, took over as CEO in 2015 and steered the studio toward smaller, self-funded projects, and one of them changed everything: Conan Exiles, an open-world survival game set in Howard's Hyborian Age, entered Early Access in January 2017, released fully in May 2018 and became the best-selling title Funcom had ever made, sustained since by years of updates and expansion content. That success reshaped the company. In 2018 Funcom formed Heroic Signatures with Cabinet Group to hold the interactive rights to Conan and the wider Howard library, later taking full ownership of the venture; The Secret World was relaunched as the free-to-play Secret World Legends; and a publishing arm emerged with Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden, Conan Unconquered, Moons of Madness and later Dune: Spice Wars. Tencent, which became the largest shareholder in 2019, completed a full acquisition in 2020 and took the company private after almost fifteen years on the Oslo exchange, and the added stability funded the acquisition of Stockholm studio The Outsiders, makers of Metal: Hellsinger, and the studio's biggest bet yet: Dune: Awakening, the open-world survival MMO set on Frank Herbert's Arrakis, which arrived in June 2025 as the largest launch in Funcom's history. Today the company operates from Oslo with studios in Durham and Stockholm, still specializing in the persistent online worlds it has built since Anarchy Online. Conan Exiles Enhanced, a ground-up Unreal Engine 5 rebuild developed with Inflexion Games and delivered as a free upgrade to every existing owner, shows how Funcom treats its catalog: a game bought years ago keeps growing, which is exactly why these worlds remain worth stepping into now.

Conan Exiles Enhanced drops you into the Exiled Lands of Hyboria with nothing but the rags on your back and a debt to the barbarian who cut you down from the corpse tree. Hunt for meat, find clean water, cook what you can and learn which plants heal and which ones poison. Heat and cold are real threats here, so you dress for the climate, light campfires in the north and seek shade in the south. When a sandstorm rolls across the dunes you need walls between you and it, and when you wander into darkened ruins the foul sorcery inside can corrupt you before you see it coming. Progression feels earned: every skill point and recipe takes you one step further from scavenger and closer to a barbarian who can hold ground.

Build a Home, Then a Kingdom

Conan Exiles is one of the most flexible builders in the survival genre.
