Ubisoft Sofia

Ubisoft Sofia is the Bulgarian development studio of French publisher Ubisoft, founded in Sofia in 2006 with a team of just 11 developers. It was Ubisoft's second development studio in Eastern Europe, set up on the strength of the Ubisoft Romania team's success, and its early years read like a tour of the publisher's catalog from that era. The studio's first release was CSI: 3 Dimensions of Murder on PlayStation 2, and it went on to work on Rayman Raving Rabbids and Rayman Raving Rabbids 2, build casual Nintendo DS titles such as Imagine: Fashion Designer and Style Lab: Makeover, and develop two entries in the long-running Chessmaster series - Chessmaster: The Art of Learning for DS and PSP in 2007 and Chessmaster Live in 2008. Alongside Rabbids Go Home in 2009, Sofia handled Prince of Persia Classic in 2007 and the Prince of Persia Trilogy HD collection for PlayStation 3, released across 2010 and 2011, then closed out its first chapter with Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars in 2011, a turn-based tactics take on the Ghost Recon series for the Nintendo 3DS.

Assassin's Creed became the studio's defining series. Sofia led Assassin's Creed III: Liberation, the 2012 PlayStation Vita adventure, and brought it to a wider audience with Liberation HD in 2014 on PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade and PC. After serving as an associate studio on Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag, the team led Assassin's Creed Rogue, co-developed with Ubisoft Kyiv and released in 2014 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, with the PC version following on March 10, 2015. Sofia later produced Assassin's Creed Rogue Remastered for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2018. Since then the studio has been a constant presence on Ubisoft's biggest projects, co-developing Assassin's Creed Origins and its expansion The Curse of the Pharaohs, Tom Clancy's The Division 2 and its Episode 2, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Assassin's Creed Mirage and Assassin's Creed Shadows. Along the way it led the Valhalla expansion Dawn of Ragnarok in 2022, Mirage for iPhone and iPad in 2024, and the macOS version of Shadows. Named Best Workplace in the Game Dev Industry in Bulgaria in 2016 and Best Tech Place to Work at the Global Technology Awards in 2019, Ubisoft Sofia now employs more than 220 people, marks its 20th anniversary in 2026, and operates within Vantage Studios, the Ubisoft subsidiary dedicated to Assassin's Creed, Far Cry and Rainbow Six. For players, Assassin's Creed Rogue remains the clearest showcase of what the team can do: a darker, Templar's-eye view of the Seven Years' War, told through Shay Patrick Cormac's turn against the Brotherhood that trained him.

Assassin's Creed Rogue asks a question the series had never answered from the inside: what happens when an Assassin walks away from the Creed? Set in North America during the chaos of the French and Indian War, it casts you as Shay Patrick Cormac, a gifted young member of the Brotherhood whose doubts become defection, and whose defection turns him into the most feared Assassin hunter of his age. It is the darkest chapter in the franchise, and the first to let you fight for the Templars.

From Assassin to Templar

Shay begins as one of Achilles Davenport's most promising recruits, fighting alongside his close friend Liam O'Brien in the colonial Brotherhood. Then a mission to a Precursor site in Lisbon ends in catastrophe, and Shay starts asking questions his mentor does not want to hear. When the Assassins answer with blades rather than explanations, he is left for dead, and he finds an unlikely new purpose among the Templars of Haytham Kenway's order.

What makes Rogue compelling is the pace of that change. You are not handed a villain to play. You watch Shay reach each decision himself, and the story gives the Templar order a voice and a point of view the series had rarely allowed before. By the end, you understand exactly why he hunts his former brothers, even in the moments you do not agree with him.

Hunting the Hunters

Playing as a Templar flips the series' familiar rhythm. Shay keeps the full skill set of a Master Assassin, but he also brings tools and abilities the series had never put in a hero's hands before:

The air rifle: Shay's signature weapon handles both close and long range combat.
