The Game Bakers

The Game Bakers is an independent studio based in Montpellier, France. Emeric Thoa and Audrey Leprince founded it in 2010. Both had worked at Ubisoft on big-budget licensed games, and they left to build something more personal. Their stated philosophy was to "make games as we cook: with a lot of love," and the partnership still holds today, with Thoa as creative director and Leprince as executive producer. The studio got its start on mobile with Squids, an iOS tactical RPG from October 2011. In Squids you flick a party of squids across the battlefield like billiard balls, a simple idea with real tactical depth. It was well received, reaching a 77% Metacritic aggregate by February 2012, and it won an EIGD award for art direction. Squids grew into a small series. Squids Wild West followed on iOS in June 2012, and Squids Odyssey collected the adventures into a console-style compilation for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. Combo Crew, a mobile brawler, earned an Apple Editor's Choice nod before the studio shifted its focus to console and PC games.

That shift began with Furi in 2016. The game launched on PC and PlayStation 4 and later came to Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Amazon Luna. Furi is built entirely from boss fights: sword-and-gun duels against the guardians of a floating prison, each one blending precise hack and slash with bullet-hell shooting. Takashi Okazaki, the creator of Afro Samurai, designed the characters. Every boss and arena has its own electro or synthwave track, commissioned from established artists including Carpenter Brut and The Toxic Avenger. The studio self-published Furi, and it earned generally favorable reviews along with an 86 from PC Gamer. Haven arrived in December 2020. It is a third-person role-playing game with survival elements about Yu and Kay, two lovers who flee an authoritarian society that forces arranged marriages and escape to the lost planet Source, and you can play it solo or in two-player co-op. In January 2026 came Cairn, a "survival climber" in which you control each of mountaineer Aava's limbs on the way up Mount Kami while managing hunger, thirst and temperature. Comic artist Mathieu Bablet served as art director and lead writer, and Martin Stig Andersen handled audio design and co-composed the music. Cairn sold over 200,000 copies in its first three days, and the studio calls it the conclusion of a "trilogy on freedom" that began with Furi and Haven. The Game Bakers is still independent and still publishes its own work, making focused, distinctive games where every duel, climb and quiet moment feels deliberately crafted. Furi is the sharpest way into that body of work.

You were captured. Look what they've done to you. Furi is a fast, ultra-responsive action game built entirely from boss fights. A man in a rabbit mask frees you from your cell, and every guardian of a floating prison stands between you and the way out. The jailer is the key: kill him, and you're free.

A Prison Made of Duels

There are no corridors full of fodder and no loot to grind in Furi. The Stranger descends through a prison of floating islands, and each one is held by a single guardian with its own arena, personality and fighting style. Between fights, quiet walking sections follow The Voice, the enigmatic man in the rabbit mask, as he guides you onward and pieces of the story fall into place. Who he is and why he is helping you is a question the game keeps you asking right to the end, and your choices decide which of its three endings you see, one of them secret.

Easy to Learn, Hard to Master

Furi was built around controls you can pick up in minutes and spend hours perfecting. There are no combo lists to memorize. Everything comes down to four tools and how well you read the guardian in front of you:

Sword

Close in and cut with quick slashes or a charged strike that hits far harder. Melee phases are tense, readable exchanges where patience and timing matter more than how fast you can press a button.

Gun

At range, the fight becomes a dual-stick shooter. Rapid fire and charged shots chip away at a boss while you weave through bullet patterns that fill the arena with color and geometry.

Parry

Deflect an attack at the right moment to turn the exchange in your favor, and a successful parry restores some of your health. Each guardian has its own silhouette, its own philosophy and its own reason for keeping you locked away, from The Chain, your jailer, to the figures waiting further down. Fights unfold in escalating phases that shift between swordplay and bullet hell, each one revealing new patterns as the guardian is pushed harder. Beyond the prison's keepers, The Flame waits in an arena of its own, and Bernard, a secret boss, is reserved for players who beat The Flame and every other guardian on the highest difficulty.

A Soundtrack That Hits as Hard as the Bosses

Furi's original soundtrack brings together Carpenter Brut, Danger, The Toxic Avenger, Lorn, Scattle, Waveshaper and Kn1ght, and each artist was briefed on a specific boss, its personality and its arena. The result is a pulsing electronic score that drives the pace of every fight and turns the walks between them into moody, atmospheric breathers. The Flame's duel carries its own track from Scattle, a fitting soundtrack for one of the game's fiercest encounters.

Built for Every Kind of Player

Furi is demanding, but it gives you room to find your level. Invincible Mode lets anyone experience the story, art and music without being stopped by a wall of a fight, while Furier, the hardest difficulty, pushes every guardian further with tougher patterns for players who have already seen them all. Furier Speedrun puts your clear times on Steam Leaderboards, alternate controls let you tune the feel to your hands, and full controller support makes a gamepad the natural way to play. Steam Achievements give you plenty to chase, and a dedicated speedrunning community keeps the duels alive.

If you love the moment a seemingly impossible fight finally clicks, Furi is built around that feeling from start to finish.
