Dambuster Studios

Dambuster Studios carries one of the longest bloodlines in British game development, even though the name itself dates only to 2014. Its story starts in the late 1990s, when a group of friends at Rare, fresh from making GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64, left to found Free Radical Design in Nottingham. That team went on to define the console shooter for a generation of PlayStation 2 owners with TimeSplitters (2000), a fast, irreverent time-hopping shooter whose sequels TimeSplitters 2 (2002) and TimeSplitters: Future Perfect (2005) spread across PS2, Xbox and GameCube, while the psychic thriller Second Sight (2004) and the PlayStation 3 exclusive Haze (2008) showed a studio willing to try different tones. At the beginning of 2009 the company was acquired by Germany's Crytek GmbH and renamed Crytek UK, becoming the group's multiplayer specialist - it built the online modes for Crysis 2 (2011) and Crysis 3 (2013), brought the original Crysis to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2011, and supported Warface and Ryse: Son of Rome (2013), while a second team began building an open-world sequel to THQ's occupied-America shooter, Homefront: The Revolution.

The turn came in 2014, when Crytek's finances collapsed and wages at the UK subsidiary stopped arriving. Crytek sold the Homefront IP to Deep Silver and closed Crytek UK, and on 30 July 2014 - the same day the doors shut - Deep Silver founded Dambuster Studios to take over the project, with most of the Crytek UK staff walking straight across into the new company. That made it Deep Silver's third in-house team after Volition and Fishlabs, and the game shipped under the Deep Silver Dambuster Studios banner in May 2016 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, dropping players into a Philadelphia under Korean People's Army occupation and following through over the next twelve months with additional co-op Resistance Mode content and three story expansions, The Voice of Freedom, Aftermath and the closing chapter Beyond the Walls. The studio then assisted Fishlabs on the space combat game Chorus (2021) and, from the start of 2018, took on the long-troubled Dead Island 2, a project it had fully inherited from Sumo Digital by 2019. Its take on zombie-infested Los Angeles landed on 21 April 2023 and sold one million copies over its launch weekend, the studio's biggest success to date. Now a wholly owned subsidiary of PLAION GmbH within Embracer Group and still based on Canal Street in Nottingham, with headcount grown from 140 in 2019 to 194 in 2025, Dambuster brings a quarter-century of first-person craft to every release, and Homefront: The Revolution on PC is where that lineage is represented here.

Homefront: The Revolution drops you into Philadelphia in 2029, four years into a brutal military occupation by the Korean People's Army. The birthplace of American independence is now a walled ghetto watched by surveillance drones and armored patrols, and its people have learned to keep their heads down. You are Ethan Brady, a fresh recruit in a Resistance cell that is short on everything except resolve. Developed by Dambuster Studios and published by Deep Silver, this open-world first person shooter asks a different question than most: not how well you can shoot, but how well you can fight when the other side holds every advantage.

An Occupied City With Three Faces

Philadelphia is not a single battlefield. Its districts fall into distinct zones, each demanding a different approach. The bombed-out Red Zones are open war, where the KPA patrols the rubble with Goliath drones and walkers and firefights break out the moment you are spotted. The Yellow Zones are the residential heart of the occupation: crowded streets, checkpoints, cameras on every corner and civilians who will report you if you draw a weapon in the open. Move here with restraint, blend into the crowds and strike where the surveillance cannot see. The Green Zones belong to the collaborators and the occupation elite, sealed off and heavily guarded. Learning how each zone breathes, and when to switch from stealth to violence, is the core of the game.

Guerrilla Warfare, Not a Fair Fight

The KPA has the technology, the firepower, the heavy armor and the air support. The Resistance has whatever it can steal, build or improvise. Every engagement is unscripted, so the tools you bring shape how it plays out.

Ambush and hit-and-run

Patrols follow routes through the city, and you can watch them from rooftops and alleys before deciding where to strike. Plant explosives on their path, open fire from cover, then disappear into the subways and sewers before reinforcements arrive. Standing your ground against a Goliath rarely ends well.

Modular weapons

Every firearm converts on the fly into a different class of weapon. A pistol becomes an SMG, an assault rifle becomes a light machine gun, a shotgun becomes a grenade launcher. With a limited arsenal you can still carry the right answer for a quiet infiltration and a sudden running battle.

The Guerrilla Tool Kit

Improvised gear is where the Resistance gets creative. Hacked RC cars packed with explosives, Molotovs, phone-triggered bombs and remote distractions let you turn the KPA's own routines against it. A checkpoint that looks impregnable head-on often has a much softer underside.

Build the Resistance and Ignite the Revolution

The Revolution is not won in a single firefight. Across the campaign you take on strike points held by the occupation, sabotage their infrastructure, seize buildings to convert into safehouses and recruit citizens to the cause. The world responds to that groundwork. Each district has a Hearts and Minds measure that rises as you weaken the KPA's grip and give people a reason to believe, and once it tips, the streets change. Civilians who once cowered start throwing stones, then take up arms alongside you, and areas that were once locked down open up as Resistance territory. It is a slow burn from oppressed citizen to revolutionary leader, and it makes each liberated block feel earned.

Ethan's story runs alongside that uprising. The cell led by Jack Parrish is chasing the whereabouts of Benjamin Walker, the Voice of Freedom whose broadcasts once kept the city's hope alive, and what they find pushes the Resistance toward its second War of Independence. Cutscenes do not flinch from what occupation costs, and the story follows desperate people making hard choices under a regime that answers dissent with force.

Take the Fight Online in Resistance Mode

The single-player campaign is only part of the package. In Resistance Mode, you and up to three friends form your own Resistance Cell and take on co-op missions across occupied Philadelphia, with your own fighter to level up, gear to unlock and a reputation to build as Heroes of the Revolution. The same guerrilla toolkit applies, and coordinating a four-way ambush on a KPA convoy is a very different experience from running it solo. Stats and achievements track your progress across both modes.

A Studio With Shooter Pedigree

Dambuster Studios in Nottingham grew out of Crytek UK, the team formerly known as Free Radical Design, the studio behind TimeSplitters. When Deep Silver took over the project in 2014, that team came with it, and their instinct for open, systemic combat shows in how every zone of the city is designed. Built on CRYENGINE, Homefront: The Revolution renders a Philadelphia of rain-slick streets, decaying rowhouses and searchlights sweeping across the rubble, a setting that sells the weight of occupation as much as any line of dialogue.

Philadelphia is waiting for someone willing to light the fuse.
