Tom Clancy's The Division 2 drops you into Washington, D.C. seven months after the Green Poison outbreak that emptied New York. Summer has settled over the capital, the government has all but collapsed, and three factions are carving up the city block by block. You are a Division agent, one of the sleeper operatives activated when everything else fails, and the White House is the last position still holding. Massive Entertainment's sequel takes the cover-based looter shooter of the first game and gives it a bigger, more reactive city, a deeper gear system and an endgame that keeps changing long after the campaign ends.

A Capital Under Siege

The Washington of The Division 2 is a near one-to-one recreation of the city center, from the National Mall and the Capitol Building to the flooded streets around the Tidal Basin and the overgrown suburbs on the map's edges. The White House becomes your Base of Operations, and the civilian settlements at the Theater and the Campus depend on you to clear control points, rescue hostages and bring supplies home. Every district you liberate sends settlers out into the streets, so the city visibly changes as you make progress. Three factions stand in your way, each fighting differently enough that you will learn to read them by their outfits before the first shot lands.

  • The Hyenas are opportunists who rush in with bats, riot shields and grenade launchers, and their controllers and rushers are built to pull you out of cover before you have a chance to settle in.
  • The True Sons are a militia formed from former Joint Task Force soldiers, disciplined and heavily armed, and they hold the strongholds and fortified positions across the southern half of the city.
  • The Outcasts are survivors of a forced quarantine who want everyone else to suffer as they did, and their flamethrowers and suicide bombers make even routine patrols dangerous.

Build the Ultimate Agent

Progression is the heart of the game. Every mission, control point and world event pays out gear, and every piece of gear rolls with attributes and talents that push you toward a particular way of playing. By the time you hit the level cap you will have a build that feels like your own, and you will keep refining it for as long as you play.

Weapons and Gear
Weapons, brand sets and gear sets stack bonuses when you commit to them. A weapon-damage brand build plays nothing like a skill-tier build or an armor-heavy tank, and exotics with unique talents give you something to chase at every stage.
Skills
Turrets, drones, seeker mines, chem launchers, hives, shields, pulse scans and traps each come in several variants. You carry two at a time, and choosing a healer drone over a striker drone changes how your squad fights.
Specializations
At the endgame you unlock Specializations such as the Sharpshooter with a .50 cal rifle, the Demolitionist with a grenade launcher and the Survivalist with an explosive crossbow, each with its own skill tree that layers on top of your build.

Teamwork Saves Lives

The Division 2 is built to be played with up to three other agents, and the whole game scales to your squad. Matchmaking is available for every mission, stronghold and control point, so you never have to go in alone unless you want to. Combining Specializations matters: a Survivalist who marks targets for the group, a Demolitionist who strips armor and a Sharpshooter who finishes what is left make a squad that is far more than the sum of its parts. Solo agents still get the full campaign and world, tuned for one player. The Division 2 is an online game and requires a persistent internet connection, even when you play by yourself.

The cooperative ceiling goes higher than a four-agent squad. Operation Dark Hours, the raid set at Washington National Airport, brings eight agents together against the Black Tusk in a series of encounters that demand real coordination, role assignments and a group that talks to each other.

The Dark Zone and Conflict

Three Dark Zones, in the east, south and west of the city, are the game's signature PvP-and-PvE spaces. Inside them, the best loot is contaminated and has to be extracted by helicopter, and any agent you meet may help you or turn rogue and take what you have. Stats are normalized in the Dark Zone so builds compete on skill and choices rather than raw gear, and a rogue-agent system with its own progression gives you a reason to go bad on purpose. For structured competition, Conflict offers four-versus-four Skirmish and Domination matches on dedicated maps, with normalized gear and a separate rank track.

An Endgame That Keeps Changing

Finishing the campaign triggers the invasion. The Black Tusk, a private military force with drones, robotic mini-tanks and its own agenda, seizes the strongholds you took and rewrites the missions you already know. World Tiers raise the challenge in steps, invaded missions and strongholds rotate week to week, and the Tidal Basin stronghold opens up as the final gate before the top tier. Dynamic world events, exotic hunts and seasonal content keep adding rewards and challenges on top, so the capital never really settles down.

Washington is waiting, agent. Grab your gear, pick a squad or go it alone, and take the capital back one block at a time.

Critic Reviews

  • Game Informer

    Matt Bertz

The story falls short, but The Division 2 is filled with loops to keep you invested in upgrading your agent well beyond the endgame, including gear score optimization, Dark Zone ventures, and daily challenges.

A packed, rewarding, and frequently thrilling looter shooter that should have a bright future.

The Division 2's campaign is full of great gunplay, loot, and missions. Only toward the end of my 60 hours of play did it start to suffer from a lack of interesting incentives, but the journey was enough fun that it made up for the destination.
