A colossal alien structure appears in Earth's orbit, and the team sent to study it does not come home. Scars Above puts you inside the suit of Dr Kate Ward, a member of the Sentient Contact Assessment and Response team, stranded alone on an extrasolar planet with no crew, no answers and very little margin for error.
Some Things Were Not Meant To Be Discovered
Humanity names the structure the Metahedron. SCAR, a team of scientists and engineers rather than soldiers, goes up to investigate it, and the Metahedron hauls them across space to a world nobody has charted. Kate wakes dazed and separated from everyone she arrived with. Finding them means understanding where you have been taken and why, and the answer sits behind an ancient civilisation that disappeared long before humanity started looking up.
Research Is How You Survive
Kate is a scientist to her core, and the game builds its entire loop around that. Scanning is not a collectible hunt, it is your combat preparation.
- Scan everything that moves
- Point the scanner at artifacts, materials and creatures to extract their features, properties and weaknesses. A monster that flattened you on sight becomes manageable the moment you know which element it cannot tolerate and where its weak points sit.
- Turn findings into equipment
- Analysis feeds the Xenobiology and Engineering trees, unlocking abilities alongside new gadgets and weapons. Progress comes from what you have learned about this planet, not from grinding the same encounter until the numbers tip.
- Craft for the fight ahead
- Gadgets, consumables and items are built from what you recover in the field. Preparation carries real weight here, and walking into an unfamiliar area without the right tools is usually the reason a run ends.
Every Encounter Asks For A Plan
Combat is deliberate and unforgiving in the way the best of the genre are. Ranged weapons, devices, consumables and melee attacks all draw on a stamina pool you have to spend carefully as you run, dodge and reposition. Elemental attacks combine in ways that break through otherwise impassable obstacles as readily as they break through an enemy, so the environment becomes part of your arsenal. Trading blows is rarely the answer. Reading the fight and exploiting what you know is.
A World Worth Being Afraid Of
- Journey through marshlands, freezing wastelands, underground caverns and alien facilities, each with its own challenges, enemies, secrets and environmental hazards to work around.
- Explore gorgeous, hostile landscapes threaded with ruins that hint at an advanced civilisation, with mysteries left in the open for players who take the time to look properly.
- Face ghastly enemy designs that run from hulking rock-covered monstrosities to nightmarish things lurking in the dark, each demanding a different set of tactics.
Thrilling Boss Fights
The bosses are where the research pays off. Diverse strategies and tactics keep encounters from settling into a rhythm, and each one is built to make you find a creative way through rather than a stronger gun. Beating one feels earned because it usually takes a few attempts, a scan or two, and a genuine change of approach.
If you like science fiction that treats curiosity as a survival skill, Kate's walk across this planet is worth taking. Step onto the exoplanet, scan your first creature, and start working out what happened here.
