Max Payne 3

Digital 265

Max Payne 3 picks up years after the events that destroyed Max's life in New York. He is washed up and leaning hard on painkillers and whiskey when he takes a private security job in São Paulo, Brazil, protecting the family of real estate mogul Rodrigo Branco. When that job goes wrong, Max is left alone in an unfamiliar city, fighting for the truth and for a way out. Rockstar's take on the series pairs a dark, twisted noir story with some of the most physical third-person shooting ever put in a game.

A New City, the Same Old Ghosts

The job comes through Raul Passos, an old acquaintance from Max's past who now works security for the Brancos. On paper it looks easy: keep the rich and reckless out of trouble at rooftop parties and nightclubs. It does not stay easy. A kidnapping drags Max out of the penthouses and into the favelas and back streets of São Paulo, up against street gangs like the Comando Sombra and a paramilitary force with an agenda of its own. Along the way, flashbacks to a snowbound New Jersey show how he ended up here.

James McCaffrey returns as Max, and his weary, sardonic narration holds it all together. The story moves without hard breaks between cutscenes and gameplay, and stylized on-screen text and visual distortion reflect Max's state of mind, so the city often feels as disorienting to you as it does to him.

Gunplay Built Around Bullet Time

Bullet Time has defined Max Payne since 2001, and Max Payne 3 builds its entire combat system around it.

  • Bullet Time: slow the world down to line up headshots and pick apart a room full of enemies, refilling the meter by taking down opponents in the middle of a firefight so you can do it all again.
  • Shootdodge: launch Max through the air in any direction while time slows, then keep shooting after he hits the ground, aiming from his back as enemies close in around him.
  • Last Man Standing: take a fatal hit with a painkiller in reserve and you get one slow-motion chance to shoot whoever brought you down, turning near-defeat into a second wind.
  • Painkillers and cover: health does not regenerate, so scavenging painkillers matters, and the cover system lets Max catch his breath before breaking back out into the open.
  • Euphoria animation: Euphoria technology makes Max and his enemies react physically to every bullet, stumble and fall, so no two gunfights ever play out in quite the same way.

Multiplayer With Real Depth

Max Payne 3 was the first entry in the series to add multiplayer, and it carries the campaign's gunplay into competitive matches. Maps and mode progression shift dynamically for every player as a match unfolds, while a deep reward and leveling system, persistent crews and multiple strategic Loadout options give you reasons to keep coming back long after the story is finished.

Every Add-On Pack Included

This version of Max Payne 3 includes the complete original game together with all ten downloadable content packs released for it: Deathmatch Made In Heaven, Painful Memories Pack, Hostage Negotiation Pack, Local Justice Pack, Silent Killer Loadout Pack, Cemetery Map, Special Edition Pack, Deadly Force Burst, Pill Bottle Item and the Classic Max Payne 1 Character. You get the full package from the start, with nothing extra to track down.

Why It Still Holds Up

Remedy Entertainment created Max Payne, and Rockstar carried the series forward with a sequel that respects its noir roots while taking the story somewhere unexpected. The sun-bleached São Paulo setting, the haunting score by the band HEALTH and the detail packed into every location give it a character few shooters match, and the shooting still feels sharp more than a decade on.

If you have ever wanted to dive sideways through a doorway in slow motion with a pistol in each hand, this is the place to do it. Step into Max's worn-out shoes, follow him through São Paulo, and find out how far a man can fall before he finally fights back.
