Relic Entertainment

Relic Entertainment was founded in May 1997 in Vancouver, British Columbia, by Alex Garden, Luke Moloney, Erin Daly, Aaron Kambeitz, Rob Cunningham, Gary Shaw and Shane Alfreds, and it made its name almost immediately with Homeworld in 1999, a real-time strategy game that moved the genre into fully three-dimensional space and paired its fleet combat with a somber, quietly told story of a people searching for their lost world. Impossible Creatures followed in 2003, letting players splice animals into custom armies, before the studio settled into the two series that still define it. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, from 2004 onward, brought the grim tabletop universe to the PC with squad-based combat and a focus on holding territory rather than harvesting resources, and Company of Heroes, from 2006 onward, applied the same philosophy to the Second World War with cover, suppression and destructible terrain that made every hedgerow and building matter. Publisher THQ announced on April 27, 2004 that it was acquiring Relic for close to US$10 million in an all-cash transaction, and under THQ the studio also stepped outside strategy with Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine in 2011, a third-person action game that put players inside the armor of an Ultramarine captain and blended chainsword melee with bolter gunplay without ever letting either feel like an afterthought.

THQ's collapse changed Relic's ownership again: on January 23, 2013, in THQ's bankruptcy proceedings, the studio was sold to Sega for US$26.6 million. The Sega years brought Company of Heroes 2, which pushed the series onto the Eastern Front with dynamic weather and a line-of-sight system that rewarded careful positioning, a stewardship of Microsoft's flagship strategy franchise with Age of Empires IV, announced in 2017, and Company of Heroes 3 in 2023, which layered a turn-based campaign map over the series' signature tactical battles. The relationship ended painfully. In May 2023 Sega laid off more than 120 employees at Relic, and on March 28, 2024 the studio announced that an external investor had helped it go independent, a transition followed in April 2024 by the loss of over 40 more staff. Relic is now an independent studio headquartered in Vancouver under CEO Justin Dowdeswell, and it has taken direct control of its legacy, appearing on Steam as both developer and publisher of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine. For players, the catalog matters because Relic never treated real-time strategy as a spreadsheet: its games are about ground held, squads kept alive and the texture of a battlefield, and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine and Company of Heroes 2 Platinum Edition remain the clearest expressions of a studio that has spent nearly three decades making tactics feel physical.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine puts you inside the power armor of Captain Titus, a veteran of the Ultramarines chapter, as a millions-strong Ork horde tears into the Forge World of Graia. Relic Entertainment, the studio behind Dawn of War, built a third-person action game around a simple idea: a Space Marine does not take cover, he takes the fight to the enemy. Bolter in one hand, chainsword in the other, you are the Emperor's answer to a planet that cannot be allowed to fall.

Hold the Line on Graia

Forge Worlds are the planet-sized factories of the Imperium, and Graia builds the Warlord-class Titans that decide wars. With an Imperial liberation fleet still en route, Titus, the stoic Sergeant Sidonus and the young, by-the-book Leandros are dropped in to hold key locations until reinforcements arrive. What starts as a holding action against the Ork Warboss Grimskull turns into something far darker as an Inquisitor's experimental power source draws the attention of the Chaos Sorcerer Nemeroth and his Chaos Space Marines. Alongside Lieutenant Mira and the surviving Imperial Guard, Titus has to decide how far a Space Marine can bend the Codex Astartes to save a world.

Combat Built for a Space Marine

There is no cover system in Space Marine, and that is the point. Ranged and melee weapons are always both in hand, and you swap between them mid-fight without a menu. Health does not regenerate on its own: you stun a weakened enemy and execute it in a brutal animation, and the kill restores you. The result is a rhythm no other shooter of its era had, where the safest place in a firefight is usually right in the middle of the Ork mob. Fill the Fury meter and you can trigger slow-motion aiming for headshots or wade in with melee strikes that fell Nobs and Chaos Marines alike. Armor upgrades and weapon unlocks arrive through a straightforward progression system, and the game never asks you to be anything less than a seven-foot walking tank.

Weaponry of the 41st Millennium

Bolter, Stalker Bolter, Storm Bolter

The Space Marine's signature weapon fires mass-reactive shells that explode inside the target.
