Spirit stones corrupt the ambitious, the dead linger as vengeful ghosts, and the boundary between the human world and the realm of yokai grows thinner with every chapter. It is a dark, atmospheric telling of Japanese history where the folklore is as real as the steel.
Combat That Rewards Mastery
Nioh 2 keeps the layered melee system that made the original a standout among Souls-likes and pushes it further. Every weapon type has three stances, each with its own speed, damage and Ki cost, and the Ki Pulse lets you recover stamina mid-combo if your timing is sharp. The sequel's new systems are what give the fights their identity.
- Yokai Shift
- Your Guardian Spirit determines which of three yokai forms you can take, Brute, Feral or Phantom, each with a different rhythm of attack and defense. Fill the Amrita gauge, transform, and for a few precious seconds you fight as the monster instead of the man.
- Burst Counter
- When an enemy's eyes flash red, it is winding up an unblockable Burst Attack. Meet it with a well-timed Burst Counter and you shatter a chunk of its Ki, opening a window to punish. Learning the tell on every yokai is the heart of Nioh 2's difficulty curve.
- Soul Cores and Yokai Abilities
- Defeated yokai can drop Soul Cores. Purify them at a shrine and attune them to your Guardian Spirit to borrow that yokai's signature attack, from a One-Eyed Oni's ground slam to a Nure-Onna's constricting lunge, building a moveset that is uniquely yours.
- The Dark Realm
- Enemies can now drag a battle into a Dark Realm where your Ki recovers at a crawl and the yokai grow stronger. Surviving it means fighting with discipline rather than aggression, and dispelling it by defeating its source is one of the most satisfying turns in the game.
Three Expansions, One Complete Story
The Complete Edition includes every post-launch chapter, and together they extend the tale backwards through the Heian period to reveal where the conflict with Otakemaru truly began.
- The Tengu's Disciple sends you to the closing years of the Heian period, where the Genji and Heike clans wage a merciless war. You fight beside Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his loyal Benkei, take up the versatile Splitstaff, and witness the prologue that set the events of Nioh 2 in motion.
- Darkness in the Capital drops you into mid-Heian Kyoto, a city overrun by evil spirits and yokai. Guided by the legendary onmyoji Abe no Seimei, you uncover the ties between this distant era and your own, and master the Fists, a weapon built for relentless close-range pressure.
- The First Samurai brings the saga to its climax at Suzuka Pass in the earliest days of the Heian period. Here you learn the origin of Otakemaru and face your arch-nemesis once more, with the Depths of the Underworld offering the most demanding endgame content Team Ninja has built.
Build, Loot and Fight Together
With eleven weapon types spanning the odachi, switchglaive, kusarigama, tonfa, hatchets and more, plus Ninjutsu, Onmyo magic and a deep skill tree for each discipline, Nioh 2 is a build crafter's game. Gear drops constantly, set bonuses encourage specialization, and the Blacksmith lets you temper, soul match and remodel until your favorite piece keeps pace with the late game.
When a boss refuses to fall, you are not alone. Summon another player into your mission through Expeditions, jump into a friend's game to lend a hand, or call an AI ally from a Benevolent Grave left by another player. Online leaderboards, achievements and trading cards round out the Steam release, which also grants the exclusive Valve Helmet through the Boons tab at any shrine. On a capable display the game supports 4K, ultrawide, HDR and up to 120 FPS, so the choreography of a well-timed Burst Counter has never looked sharper.
