Injustice: Gods Among Us - Ultimate Edition is the complete version of NetherRealm Studios' DC Comics fighting game: the full 2013 game, all six downloadable fighters, more than 30 additional skins and 60 extra S.T.A.R. Labs missions in one package. Built by the team behind Mortal Kombat, it takes the Justice League and its enemies into a story where Superman has become the thing he once fought, and turns every arena, character power and comic-book rivalry into part of the fight.
A World Where Superman Rules
The story opens with the Joker's cruelest trick. Fooled by a dose of fear toxin, Superman kills Lois Lane and their unborn child, and the nuclear device wired to her heartbeat levels Metropolis. The Man of Steel answers by killing the Joker on the spot, and then by deciding that the world can no longer be trusted to govern itself. Five years later his Regime rules the planet, with Wonder Woman, Cyborg, The Flash and a broken Green Lantern enforcing his peace.
Batman's Insurgency is losing that war, so it reaches across dimensions and pulls Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Aquaman and the Joker from an Earth where none of this happened. Twelve story chapters pass control from hero to hero, so you learn the roster as you play, and the writing treats these characters with the weight the comics do. The alternate-universe premise later grew into its own DC comic series and a sequel, and this is where it all began.
Fighting Built for Superheroes
Underneath the licenses this is a 2.5D fighter in the modern NetherRealm mold: a four-button layout, a shared super meter you spend on enhanced specials and escapes, and combo strings that reward practice without demanding a fighting-game pedigree. What sets it apart is how much of each match happens outside the basic exchange of punches.
- Character Traits
- Every fighter has a dedicated trait button that expresses who they are. Batman calls in mechanical bats to extend pressure, The Flash slows time for a burst of speed, Superman powers up his strikes, and Doomsday shrugs off hits while advancing. Learning a trait is learning the character.
- Super Moves
- A full meter unlocks each character's cinematic Super Move, from Superman punching an opponent into orbit and back down to Earth to Green Arrow's arsenal of trick arrows. They are as much a showcase of the character as a damage tool, and they punctuate the momentum swings of a close match.
- The Clash System
- Once you have lost your first health bar, you can interrupt a combo and trigger a Clash. Both players secretly wager super meter, the winner heals or deals damage, and the fighters trade lines drawn straight from their comic history. It turns a comeback into a moment of drama.
- Interactive Arenas
- Arenas are weapons. Power characters hurl cars and statues, gadget characters vault off them or rig them to explode, and a heavy enough hit sends an opponent through the scenery into a new section of the stage. Fight on Metropolis rooftops, inside Arkham Asylum, at the Fortress of Solitude or on the Watchtower.
The Complete Roster
The launch roster covers 24 fighters across the DC universe: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Cyborg, Hawkgirl, Green Arrow, Shazam, Nightwing, Raven, Catwoman, Harley Quinn, the Joker, Lex Luthor, Bane, Deathstroke, Black Adam, Sinestro, Ares, Killer Frost, Solomon Grundy and Doomsday. The Ultimate Edition adds the six fighters released after launch, bringing the total to 30.
- Batgirl brings Barbara Gordon's acrobatics and a gadget kit that plays differently from her mentor, with a teleporting smoke-bomb trait that makes her one of the hardest characters to pin down.
- General Zod fights with Kryptonian strength and a phantom-zone trait that summons a creature to hold opponents in place, a natural rival for anyone maining Superman.
- Lobo, the Main Man himself, is a brawler built around a chain hook and a shotgun, with the swagger to match. His intro and exit scenes are exactly what fans of the character would want.
- Martian Manhunter shapeshifts mid-combo, stretching limbs and phasing through attacks, and comes with a range that makes him one of the roster's most unusual zoners.
- Scorpion crosses over from Mortal Kombat, spear and teleport intact, redesigned by Jim Lee to fit the DC universe. He is the crossover NetherRealm fans asked for the moment the game was announced.
- Zatanna casts backwards-spoken spells that trap, teleport and levitate opponents, giving the roster a genuine trickster with a mix-up game unlike anyone else's.
More than 30 extra skins round out the package, including alternate looks drawn from Red Son, Blackest Night, Arkham City and Flashpoint, so the fighter you pick can wear whichever era of DC history you prefer.
Beyond the Story
S.T.A.R. Labs is the game's challenge mode, and the Ultimate Edition includes every mission released for it, 300 in total. Each set is themed around a character and asks for something specific: land a particular combo, win under a modifier, survive an onslaught, or complete a scenario built around the character's story, with a three-star rating on every one to chase. It is the deepest single-player mode in any NetherRealm game and a real course in the roster's mechanics.
Battles mode offers ladders with their own conditions, from classic arcade runs to fights where your health never regenerates or where you face the entire roster in order. One-on-one matches against another player remain the heart of the game, and a training mode with full frame data lets you take a character apart before you commit to them.
Whether you want to settle Batman versus Superman properly, dig into a fighting system with real depth, or just see the Joker face a Justice League that has stopped holding back, the Ultimate Edition gives you the whole of Injustice from its opening chapter to the last S.T.A.R. Labs mission. Pick your side and step into the arena.
