Blind Squirrel Games

Blind Squirrel Games is the kind of studio whose name most players never see on a box, but whose work sits inside some of the most-played remasters and ports of the last decade. Founded in 2010 by Brad Hendricks, who still runs the company as CEO, the Irvine, California studio built its reputation as an external development partner: the team a publisher brings in when a beloved game needs to be rebuilt for new hardware, when a large project needs more hands, or when a console title has to run on a platform it was never designed for. Its breakout credit was BioShock: The Collection, published by 2K in 2016, where Blind Squirrel handled the art and engineering behind BioShock Remastered and BioShock 2 Remastered and brought BioShock Infinite to the current consoles of the day. That remaster of Rapture is still the version of BioShock most people play today. The studio followed it with full remaster services on Borderlands Game of the Year Edition for Gearbox Software, contributed to Mass Effect Legendary Edition, and ported Borderlands 3 and Tiny Tina's Wonderlands to Amazon Luna, establishing a pattern of being trusted with other studios' most valuable back catalog.

The company, legally Blind Squirrel Entertainment, Inc., has since grown well beyond a single office. Alongside Irvine it operates studios in Austin, Texas and Auckland, New Zealand, and in February 2025, the month it marked its fifteenth anniversary, it announced a fourth studio in Manizales, Colombia, formed by acquiring the software firm Distributed Development and led by Studio Director Eric Herrera; that team has built an Unreal Engine-based AI tool intended to speed up the porting work the studio is known for. The co-development side of the business has matured in parallel, with credits on Amazon Games' MMORPG New World, character work on Obsidian Entertainment's Avowed, campaign development on Delta Force: Black Hawk Down, contributions to State of Decay 3 and Age of Darkness: Final Stand, the mobile title The Dragon Prince: Xadia, and the full iOS port of Warframe Mobile. In 2025 the studio also announced Cosmorons, an intergalactic arcade shooter that is its first original IP. For players, the Blind Squirrel catalog matters because it is largely made up of games they already love, delivered in the form they are most likely to be playing now, and the BioShock Remastered you find here is the clearest example of that craft.

BioShock Remastered brings Irrational Games' 2007 landmark back in high resolution, with the base game and its bonus content in one package. It is 1960, your plane has gone down in the mid-Atlantic, and the only shelter in sight is a lighthouse standing over Rapture, a city built on the ocean floor by the industrialist Andrew Ryan. What waits below is a place where art deco grandeur, genetic ambition and unchecked ideology have collapsed into something far worse, and a first-person shooter that still asks harder questions than most of its successors.

A City Beneath the Sea

Rapture was founded as a refuge for artists, scientists and industrialists who wanted to work free of government, religion and the common man. By the time you arrive, the experiment has failed. Water pours through the glass tunnels, the citizens have twisted themselves into Splicers through the overuse of ADAM, and the voices of Ryan, Atlas, Dr. Tenenbaum and Sander Cohen argue over the radio about who is to blame. Audio diaries scattered through Fort Frolic, Arcadia and Hephaestus fill in the years leading to the fall, and the city itself, with its neon signs, flooded ballrooms and propaganda posters, tells the rest.
